1. It's the home of the oldest continually published newspaper in the USA.

Answer: Connecticut

The Hartford Courant has been in continuous publication since 1764. It is also the largest daily newspaper in Connecticut. The New Hampshire Gazette has been published on-and-off since 1756 and although the oldest newspaper in the USA it has not been continually published.
2. The official state dance is the Shag.

Answer: South Carolina

The Shag is performed to the music of rhythm and blues. The Shag became the official state dance of South Carolina in 1984. According to the State House website it can be performed to almost any tempo and consists of a basic step of a six-count, eight-step pattern dance in a slot.
3. It is the site of a large mountain carving.

Answer: South Dakota

Mount Rushmore depicts the sculptured carved heads of four former U.S. Presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The sculptures are the work of Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941); construction began in 1927 and was completed in 1941.

The Harley Davidson motorcycle company was established in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1903. The founders were William S. Harley (1880-1943) and Arthur Davidson (1881-1950), with the help of Walter Davidson and William A. Davidson.

Answer: Maryland

Francis Scott Key was a Maryland lawyer and while watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry (Baltimore) it is believed he wrote the lyrics to the national anthem in 1814. It is understood that he was inspired by the sight of the large American flag flying above the fort.
6. Elvis Presley was born here.

Answer: Mississippi

Elvis Aaron Presley (1935-1977) was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. Sadly, his identical twin Jesse Garon Presley died at birth. Elvis Presley became an icon in the 20th Century and has been referred to as "The King of Rock and Roll".

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team represents the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana. Their inaugural game was in 1887 when they were beaten by Michigan 8-0. James Dean, Red Skelton, David Letterman and the Jackson 5 were born in this state.

Maine is bordered by the US state of New Hampshire, the Atlantic Ocean and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec. It was the 23rd state admitted to the union in 1820; the capital is Augusta and the largest city is Portland.
9. Four national flags have been flown in this state.

Answer: Michigan

Four national flags have flown over Michigan: Spanish, French, British and USA. The French and Spanish joined the cause of the Americans during the American Revolutionary War. The only place were all four flags have been flown is in present day Niles, Michigan and which today refers to itself as the "Four Flags City". The Spanish flag only flew for one day in February 1781.
10. It's the first state to make Christmas a legal holiday.

Answer: Alabama

Alabama was the first state to declare Christmas Day as a legal holiday in 1836. It was not until 1870 that it was declared as an official holiday in the USA. However, not all states followed this lead as Oklahoma only declared Christmas Day as an official holiday in 1907.
