Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Almost everyone's here already, as usual the fellas are down one end and the girls are down the other. Grabbing a drink yourself you mingle. The fellas have all got beers in their hands, which of these beers is not likely to be found at the Aussie barbeque?

Answer: Grolsch

State loyalties frequently extend to the choice of beer consumed. XXXX is a Queensland beer; Victoria Bitter is from Victoria, and West End from South Australia. Grolsch is merely a foreign interloper from The Netherlands; it's imported beer price tag makes it an unlikely source of refreshment at the Aussie barbeque.
2. You noticed the hosts had dragged the television outside and it drew a small crowd. Somebody asked, "Is Warney playing today?" What would have been on television?

Answer: cricket

Shane Warne was Australia's champion and frequently controversial leg spinning cricket star. He was chosen as one of the five greatest players of the twentieth century.
3. Haha look at Jesse the dog, she's having a great time chasing the tennis ball all over the yard. Ouch! She just ran into the Hill's Hoist. What on earth is a Hill's Hoist?

Answer: clothes line

Lance Hill invented the hoist in 1946 in suburban Adelaide. When Cyclone Tracy struck the city of Darwin on Christmas Day 1974, many houses were totally destroyed except for the Hill's Hoist!
4. Davo has just arrived. You bewdy, he's brought some Yabbies! Some what?

Answer: freshwater crayfish

The Yabbie (Cherax destructor) is found in many freshwater creeks, lakes and dams. It can be caught in nets baited with rotting meat.
5. "Come and get it!" You grab a paper plate and fill it with delicious barbeque food. Which of these foods are you least likely to find on your plate?

Answer: pizza

Other Australian BBQ staples include coleslaw, chicken wings, sausages (snags) and shaslicks.
6. Somebody asks you to pass the dead horse. What do you hand over?

Answer: tomato sauce - it's rhyming slang

It's rhyming slang, horse isn't meat found on Australian tables; Australian dog bowls sure, but not Australian tables.
7. Oh great here they are Musca Domestica, you have to constantly wave your hand over the food so they don't land and spread filthy germs. Yuk if that's not bad enough Lucilia Cuprina, has turned up, how disgusting. What is Lucilia Cuprina?

Answer: Australian Blowfly

Fat, lazy and bloated, if the blowfly lands on your food it's likely to require more than a wave of the hand to remove, they just sit there! Gross. Scientific observation has recorded over 5,500 blowfly eggs on a 150-gram piece of meat, which had been exposed for 5 hours. Enjoy your dinner.
8. Some of the kids are playing backyard cricket. Phew not you, better just watch. Which is not a common backyard cricket rule?

Answer: bonus points for hitting the batsman

You don't get points for hitting the batsman! One hand one bounce means if the ball bounces once you can still catch it, but with just one hand. Hit and run means the batsman has to run when the ball is hit. Six and out, if you hit over the fence you get six runs but you're out, and while we're at it you can go and get the ball back too.
9. Oh dear some of the blokes have had one or two beers too many. Stevo's dragged out the stereo and they're having a sing along. Which of these songs are the drunken males at an Australian bbq most likely to sing along to?

Answer: "Khe Sanh" by Cold Chisel

"Khe Sanh" a song about coming home from Vietnam has become an Australian classic. The songwriter Don Walker wrote it for a friend of his. Released on Cold Chisel's self-titled album in 1978 it was originally banned from radio due to its lyrics.
10. Johnno wants to drive home, but your hostess convinces him to take a taxi instead. She says, "Just come back tomorrow and pick up the Torana. It's fine out the front." What car company made the Torana?

Answer: Holden

The Holden Torana a motoring icon of the 1970s. First produced by Holden in 1967 with the HB model and ending production in 1979 with the UC model. Torana comes from aboriginal word meaning "to fly".
