Answer: South Yorkshire

Indeed, the Southern part of 'God's own county!' South Yorkshire consists of Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster, and there is often great rivalry between the towns and cities.
2. What river flows through Doncaster?

Answer: River Don

One of the largest rivers in the whole of Yorkshire. Unfortunately, it suffers from litter and pollution and flows past Doncatraz (the prison) and other tourist attractions. In Roman times the River Don was an extremely important trading post between the Brigantes and Coritani tribes.
3. Doncaster is bigger in area than Sheffield.

Answer: True

There are many more people in Sheffield, but Doncaster is much larger in area.
4. Which of these is an actual village in Doncaster?

Answer: Armthorpe

Armley is in Leeds, whereas Hampole is in Doncaster. Armthorpe is a large village in Doncaster, which is very close to the local hospital. Armthorpe suffered terribly after the strikes with the local pit being shut down. Armthorpe was first recorded as a village in 1086 under the name of Ernulfestorp, indicating the Vikings had an influence.
5. Which of these is a museum in Doncaster?

Answer: Cusworth Hall

A museum with enormous grounds. The Hall recently had over a million pounds spent on it due to a National Lottery grant. The museum is aimed at social and industrial history and is now owned by National Heritage.
6. Doncaster Rovers play their home games at Hatfield?

Answer: False

They used to play at Belle Vue, but now they play at Lakeside. Lakeside is a village in Doncaster that was built due to the growth of Doncaster itself. It has many amenities such as a huge shopping centre and the football ground itself.
7. In what industry did many of the men work in until the strike of the 1980s?

Answer: Coal mining

The strike ended the jobs of many thousands of people in Doncaster, and in some ways it has never recovered. No industry has taken over to the level of coal mining.
8. What did the Romans name Doncaster?

Answer: Danum

Lindum is actually the name for Lincoln. There is a Danum Hotel in the centre of Doncaster.
9. Doncaster is a city.

Answer: False

With a total population in excess of 280,000 (including Bentley, Armthorpe and the wider metropolitan borough) Doncaster still only has town status. It is the largest town in the United Kingdom.
10. Where is the castle in Doncaster?

Answer: Conisbrough

Conisbrough Castle has the oldest keep in England. It is a castle which in many ways is still intact and has thousands of tourists a year.
