Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Midwestern state would you find Carhenge, a replica of Britain's Stonehenge, made out of cars?

Answer: Nebraska

Located near Alliance, Nebraska, Carhenge is the brainchild of Jim Reinders. It was dedicated in 1987, and in its infancy it was in danger of being destroyed as an "illegally zoned junkyard". Fortunately, the government recognized it as an official tourist attraction in the early 1990s.
2. One of the most well-known, unusual tourist attractions is the Wall Drug Store, which was opened in 1931 by Ted and Dorothy Hustead. What was the first step in transforming this tiny drugstore into a ridiculously popular roadside stop?

Answer: they gave away free water

It started with a single billboard advertising free water. Instantaneously, people began coming to their store in droves. Realizing the value of signs, Ted and Dorothy plastered the landscape from coast to coast with billboards for their store. They didn't stop there, though. They also printed up souvenir signs and gave them away, asking people to post them anywhere and everywhere.
3. What unusual competition is held in Gravel Switch, Kentucky?

Answer: Outhouse racing

It has been held every October since 1992. All of these are real competions, by the way. Mashed potato wrestling is an annual event in Clark, SD in July. SPAM carving competitions are held in Austin, MN every July. The Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest is held every March in Montpelier, VT.
4. Which California county was the first to open a gift shop in their Coroner's Office?

Answer: Los Angeles

"Skeletons in the Closet", the official L.A. County Coroner's gift shop, was opened in 1993. Most of what they sell is clothing and other items with their logo, but they also offer a variety of macabre trinkets. Sacramento County followed suit in 2001.
5. At the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory tour, there is a "Flavor Graveyard", which features tombstones for flavors that they no longer offer.

Answer: True

Each year they "kill off" 8 to 12 flavors (those with the lowest sales), but in 2004, only 27 of them had actual graves. The factory is located in Waterbury, Vermont.
6. In West Windsor Township, New Jersey, there is a plaque which reads, "Martian Landing Site". What is this in reference to?

Answer: the radio broadcast of "War of the Worlds"

On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles' radio broadcast caused hysteria amongst people who had tuned in and believed it to be an actual news report, that a Martian attack was underway, centered around the town of Grover's Mills, NJ (present day, West Windsor township) near Princeton.
7. In which Midwestern state would you find the Hobo Museum?

Answer: Iowa

It is located in Britt, IA, which is the unofficial "hobo capital of the world", and it was founded in part by hobos in the 1970's. I had no idea that the lifestyle was still so prevalent. They have a magazine devoted to hobos, and have several websites where hobos can keep in touch with other hobos while they are travelling, as well as keep up on news, music, and movies of relevance.
8. Plano, Texas has a Cockroach Hall of Fame?

Answer: True

Run by Michael Bohdan, the Cockroach Hall of Fame has cockroaches in a variety of costumes, as well as annual competitions for the largest cockroach, and for the best cockroach work of art.
9. Mitchell, South Dakota boasts that it has the world's only what?

Answer: corn palace

Built in 1892, the Corn Palace is shaped like a castle, and its entire exterior is decorated with corn and grass. Each year the walls are stripped and redone with a new theme.
10. What is the name of the Elvis Presley museum in Wright City, Missouri?

Answer: Elvis is Alive Museum

Displayed in the museum are government documents, results from DNA tests, pathology reports, and over 3,000 photos which "prove" that Elvis is alive.
