The Hell Gate Bridge has also been known as the New York Connecting Railroad Bridge and The East River Arch Bridge. It was completed in 1916, after four years of construction, to connect Astoria with Randalls and Wards Islands in Manhattan across the East River. Traffic is entirely by rail.

The Pacific Fur Company, owned by John Jacob Astor, landed a party from the ship Tonquin in 1811 and began construction of Fort Astoria as an American (rather than British) trading location. Astoria, Oregon took his name from the Fort.

The Astoria neighbourhood of Queens was originally called Hallett's Cove. The name was changed to Astoria in an attempt to induce John Jacob Astor to invest in the area, which was only nominally successful.

Scott Joplin suffered from syphilis. The disease made him insane in 1916. He died on April 1, 1917 at a public mental institution in Manhattan and was buried at Saint Michael's (Episcopal) Cemetery in Astoria.

The Astoria Finnish Socialist Club was active in the early 20th Century. Suomi Hall of the Finnish Brotherhood is still located in Old Uniontown. In 2000, 6.1% of Astoria's population was Finnish.

Astoria and the State of Washington were connected across the mouth of the Columbia River by ferry service for many years. From 1962-66, a steel cantilever through truss bridge was built to complete U.S. Highway 101 running north-south. The Astoria-Megler Bridge is just over four miles long and 196 feet high, which allows ocean-going ships to pass under it and proceed up the river to Vancouver and Portland.
