Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which Hawaiian island is Honolulu located?

Answer: O'ahu

Situated on the Island of O'ahu, Honolulu is both the largest city in the State of Hawai'i and the state capital. In the Hawaiian language, the city's name means sheltered harbour or calm port. The population is a remarkable mixture of races, cultures, and languages, reflective of a history of waves of immigration.
2. Kalaupapa can be found on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Moloka'i

Kalaupapa is the site of the infamous leper colony created by King Kamehameha V in 1866. It was here that Father Damien, a Roman Catholic priest, tended to the people afflicted with Hansen's Disease. The community sits at the base of high sea cliffs on the Island of Moloka'i and is largely inaccessible.

The community still exists (tho' not as a leper colony) and visitation is strictly limited.
3. The Barking Sands Missile Range is situated on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Kaua'i

The Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands, formerly known as the Barking Sands Missile Range, is a US Naval facility and airport located on the island of Kaua'i. It is the largest range of its type in the world. The US Army acquired the private airport at Barking Sands in 1940. It was briefly designated Bonham Air Force Base in the 1960s until it was transferred to the Navy.
4. To which Hawaiian island would you go to visit Hanalei Bay?

Answer: Kaua'i

Hanalei Bay is located on the north shore of the Island of Kaua'i. Its two miles of beach are a playground for the nearby town of Princeville. Earlier in the island's history, it was a shipment point for the taro and rice grown in the area. Glimpses of Hanalei Bay are visible in the 1958 motion picture "South Pacific."
5. On which Hawaiian island can the Chain of Craters Road be found?

Answer: Hawai'i

The Chain of Craters Road is a mostly-paved road through parts of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai'i. It was envisioned as a loop road but recurrent volcanic eruptions of Kīlauea and its lava flows kept covering parts of it. The road is generally "open" and an interesting drive along the coast of the park. The Park Service posts alerts during eruptions because of the dangers of lava flows and sulfuric gas.
6. Byodo-In Temple can be seen on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: O'ahu

The Byodo-In Temple on the Island of O'ahu is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple in Uji, Kyoto, Japan. It is not itself a functioning Buddhist temple as there is no monastic community nor congregation. Located in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, it serves as a non-denominational center commemorating a century of Japanese presence in Hawai'i.

The memorial park in which it is situated is a burial place for Buddhists, Roman Catholics, Shintoists, Protestants and other Hawaiians, regardless of faith tradition.
7. The Kona Coffee Living History Farm is located on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

Coffee grown in the Kona region of the Island of Hawai'i is as good as it is expensive. Kona Coffee Living History Farm is located on the Daisaku Uchida Coffee Farm which was established in Kona in 1900. Uchida came to Hawai'i as a contract worker in a sugar plantation but quit at the end of his contract to found his own farm and business. The living-history farm demonstrates what it took to raise coffee there 1920-1945. Uchida died in 1986 at the age of 99 years.
8. To which Hawaiian island would you go to see the Lana'i Cathedrals?

Answer: Lana'i

Unlike cathedrals built by the faithful to uphold their religious traditions, the Lana'i Cathedrals are underwater features experienced by SCUBA divers. There are two principal "cathedrals." The first is near Manele Harbor. It is a cavern with an opening in its "ceiling" through which sunlight creates a stained-glass effect. The Second Cathedral is down the coast a bit. It is a huge dome with many entrances and exits through which divers can pass. Fish "congregate" in the Second Cathedral for safety and divers report swimming though schools of "ta'ape" (blue striped snapper).
9. The Halawa Valley (and waterfalls) can be visited on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Moloka'i

It is a long drive from the airport in Moloka'i to the Halawa Valley and a long hike (about two steep miles) up the valley to the two waterfalls: Mo'aula Falls and Hipuapua Falls. Not many people have occupied the Halawa Valley on the eastern end of Moloka'i since the tsunamis of 1946 and 1957 destroyed most of the farms. Most of the land in the valley is privately owned and ought not be hiked without permission (or with a local guide who has permission).
10. On which Hawaiian island is Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, situated?

Answer: O'ahu

In addition to operating theme parks with adjacent hotels, Disney owns a number of "resorts" which include hotels, time-share villas, and restaurants. One of these is Aulani, a beach-side resort at Kapolei on the Island of O'ahu. Opened in 2011, Aulani strives to provide an authentic Hawaiian experience with a tiny bit of Disney magic mixed in.

The programme is overseen by a group of Hawaiian elders to ensure authenticity. One may still meet Mickey Mouse, Lilo and Stitch, or Moana in the resort but the emphasis is on Hawaiian culture.
