Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Austrian city of Salzburg is a popular tourist destination and well known as the birthplace of Mozart. From which food item did the city derive its name?

Answer: Salt

Salzburg literally translates to 'Salt Fortress'. The wealth of the city was at one time closely tied to the trade of salt, an important food preservative. There are a number of salt mines located close to Salzburg. The river Salzach that flows by the city also derives its name from salt and was so named because of the barges carrying salt that used the river for transportation.
2. When the Portuguese first landed at Mumbai in 1508, they named the group of islands 'Bom Bahia' which was later Anglicized to Bombay during the British rule of India. Why was the city named Bom Bahia?

Answer: It meant 'good harbour'.

The first Europeans to reach Bombay were the Portuguese led by Francisco de Almeida. At the time, the city was nothing more than a group of seven islands. In 1661, the islands were given to England as part of the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza's dowry on her marriage to King Charles II of England.
3. Paris was called Lutetia by the Romans, which meant 'marshy place'. However after the decline of the Roman Empire and towards the end of Roman occupation, the city reverted to its earlier name of Paris. How did it get the name Paris in the first place?

Answer: From a Celtic tribe

Paris was named after Parisii, a Celtic Iron Age tribe that lived on the banks of the Seine River from around 250 BC. After the Romans invaded and conquered the area in 52 BC, it was known as Lutetia before reverting to its former name towards the 5th century AD.
