Answer: Jefferson Davis

Jefferson Davis was the leader of the Southern Confederacy, whilst Abraham Lincoln led the Union, assisted by Ulysses Grant. Mikhail Gorbachev was the last leader of the Soviet Union (1985-1991).
2. What does the word "emancipation" mean?

Answer: freeing

The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued on January 1st, 1863. It proclaimed the freedom of all slaves in areas under Confederate control and in effect made the abolition of slavery a key aim of the Civil War.
3. Which of these statements is FALSE?

Answer: Lincoln was brusque and undiplomatic.

Lincoln was always known for being diplomatic and having a way with words. Obama often likes to quote Lincoln.
4. General Lee won the Battle of Gettysburg.

Answer: False

Lee had won all of his battles until Gettysburg and he was actually winning the battle, until the last day, when he went horribly wrong.
5. Which state was the first to secede from (that is, leave) the Union?

Answer: South Carolina

Since the early 1830s and an attempt by South Carolina to nullify Federal tariffs relations between South Carolina had the Union had often been strained. The state declared on its secession from the Union on December 20th, 1860.
6. Who won the 1864 elections?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln won the 1864 elections, although he thoroughly expected not to. This also contributed to helping him win the War.
7. In adult life General Grant was known as Ulysses S Grant.

Answer: True

He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant but was enrolled at West Point as Ulysses S Grant and kept that name. He was noted for his competence, efficiency and, some would say, also for ruthlessness.
8. Which two countries did the Confederacy hope to get to join them in exchange for cotton?

Answer: France and Britain

The South expected to have the help of France and Britain, in exchange for cotton, but both these countries actually had lots of cotton and declined the offer.
9. Which day in 1865 is generally regarded as the end of the Civil War?

Answer: April 9th

This is the date of Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. However, fighting continued for a few weeks in some areas.
10. What moniker was given to Lincoln's murderer, Booth?

Answer: Handsomest man in America

He had a very pleasant appearance, but all he really wanted was to go down in history.
11. What was the Underground Railroad?

Answer: A secret escape route for slaves

There were many people who ran the Underground Railroad and they helped slaves to escape and start a new life.
12. Which of these was an escaped slave?

Answer: Henry Brown

Henry Brown made a remarkable escape, for he escaped in a dry goods box!
13. Was Lincoln in favour of bringing about social and political equality for Blacks and Whites?

Answer: No

He disagreed with slavery, but he did not fully accept all races as equal. Full equality between Blacks and Whites was not on the political agenda at the time.
14. What were 'sodbusters?'

Answer: Farmers

These newly freed "sodbusters", who included many former slaves, built their own houses, called "soddies", of turf (sod).

Answer: Battle of Wounded Knee

The Battle of Wounded Knee took place in 1890, nearly twenty years after Robert E. Lee's death!
