Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What name was given to the most powerful group of Spartans?

Answer: Spartiates

The Spartiates were Spartan males who were trained from a very young age for battle and hardship. They had the reputation of being the most feared and fearless soldiers in Greece.

Spartiates were the only people with full citizenship and political rights among the classes in Spartan law.
2. In what year did the Peloponnesian War begin?

Answer: 431 B.C

The Peloponnesian War was fought between the Delian League (Athens and other city states) and the Peloponnesian League (Sparta and allied city states).

Some sources say the war started because Athens' power was growing rapidly so the Spartans were getting jealous of this so they started a war against them.
3. What was the broadsword of Greece called?

Answer: Kopis

The sword Kopis had a much more heavier upper end of the sword than the lower end of the sword. This was because its aim was to slash the enemy instead of stabbing.
4. What was the meeting place and marketplace of a Greek city or town called?

Answer: Agora

The agora was a place where people could meet, trade items and look for work. If there was an important meeting in the city about politics or other subjects it would be held in the agora.
5. What was typical everyday food in Ancient Greece?

Answer: Fish, wine, olives and bread

Greeks ate a lot of olives because it was easy to grow them in the poor soil. As for fish, wine and bread they were easy to produce or, in the case of fish, catch.
6. Why did Pericles build/rebuild connecting walls to Port Piraeus to use Athens as an island in the Second Peloponessian War?

Answer: Because Pericles knew the Spartans would dominate on land

Pericles used this strategy because he knew the Spartans' strength and experience in battle would dominate over the Athenian soldiers.

He was planning to sustain and grow Athens' power by using its maritime strength. He could do this because Athens' maritime power was unmatched in Greece.
7. What famous battle was fought between Philip II and Thebes, Athens and other city states in Greece? Thebes and Athens and other city states were rebelling against Philip II's rule in Greece.

Answer: Battle of Chaeronea

Athens, Thebes and other city states agreed to make an alliance to get rid of Macedon power in Greece.

Chaeronea was a decisive Macedon victory because of Philip II's and his son Alexander's brilliant leadership.
8. What symbol was usually used on the front of a Spartan shield?

Answer: Lambda

Spartans used the letter lambda (which looks rather like an inverted "V")represent their state. Spartans displayed the lambda on their shields to identify themselves as the people of Lacedaemonia.
9. The Greek theater were played by characters with what unusual object/clothing?

Answer: Masks of gods

They used masks to represent the god that they're acting.

Most theaters that had masks of gods often meant that they played dramatized stories about the gods' affairs.
10. What two minor city states were in constant dispute with each other in Greece? When there was a war going one of them often sided with the Delian League and the other the Peloponnesian League. (During the time of the Peloponnesian wars: First war 460-445 B.C., Second war 431-404 B.C.).

Answer: Argos and Corinth

The two cities never agreed on anything and often had battles with one another. Corinth always sided with the Peloponnesian League because Argos always sided with the Delian League.

They both were careful not to be too aggressive to each other because both cities were valuable to the very powerful city states in Greece such as Sparta and Athens. So if they were too aggressive they would trigger a major war in Greece.
