Herbert M. Sobel was an officer in the United States Army during World War II. He was initially the commanding officer of Company "E" in the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. Sobel also served in Korea where he commanded a rifle company.

He achieved the rank of Captain while serving on active duty in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard.
2. What was the name of the large steep hill that the men of Easy Company had to run up during their stay at the training camp Toccoa?

Currahee was three miles up and three miles down, a total of six miles.
3. Who was the longest serving commander of Easy Company?

Answer: Speirs

Ronald Speirs (April 20, 1920 - April 11, 2007) was initially a platoon leader in Company "D" ("Dog" Company) of the 2nd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Speirs was reassigned to command "E" or "Easy" Company in Bastogne at the end of the Battle of the Bulge. Speirs also served in Korea, where he commanded a rifle company, and later became the American Governor for Spandau Prison in Berlin.

He served as a captain in the European Theater but retired as a lieutenant colonel.
4. Where were the four 105mm artillery guns that the men of Easy Company captured on D-day?

Answer: Brecourt Manor

In the chaotic hours after the jump, most of the company were spread over a wide area, but Lieutenant Richard Winters led a small squad of men in a daring maneuver on a German patrol convoy, then successfully captured four German artillery pieces at Brecourt Manor.
5. Which member of Easy Company earned the nickname "Wild Bill"?

Answer: Guarnere

"They walked right into us. We annihilated the sons of bitches right there. We let 'em get past us, and then we opened fire. That was my first taste of combat. We just shot down all the bastards. We did not take any prisoners. They never knew what hit them". - Wild Bill Guarnere's account on his first contact with the Germans.
6. Which member of Easy Company collected watches of dead Germans?

Answer: Perconte

Most soldiers serving anywhere - and especially abroad - collect souvenirs or trophies.
7. Who was Easy Company's medic?

Answer: Doc Roe

The medics were the most popular, respected, and appreciated men in the company. Their weapons were first-aid kits; their place on the line was wherever a man called out that he was wounded. Lieutenant Foley had special praise for Pvt. Eugene Roe. "He was there when he was needed, and how he got 'there' you often wondered.

He never received recognition for his bravery, his heroic servicing of the wounded. I recommended him for a Silver Star after a devastating firefight when his exploits were typicaly outstanding. Maybe I didn't use the proper words and phrases, perhaps Lieutenant Dike didn't approve, or somewhere along the line it was cast aside. I don't know. I never knew except that if any man who struggled in the snow and the cold, in the many attacks through the open and through the woods, ever deserved such a medal, it was our medic, Gene Roe." Dick Winter's biography.
8. How many combat jumps did most of the men of Easy Company make?

Answer: 2

The combat jumps were into Normandy during Operation Overlord and into the Netherlands during operation Market Garden.
9. Who did Guarnere get into a fight with over religion?

Answer: Joseph Liebgott

Guarnere was saying how he didn't want to fight next to Winters because he thought he was a Quaker, then the subject turned to Sobel, and Guarnere said that he was a Jew. Liebgott took offence because he was also a Jew. They then started to fight.
10. Who was the only officer in Easy Company who made three combat jumps?

Answer: Nixon

Nixon was one of the few men of the 101st Airborne to jump with another division or regiment. On March 24, 1945, Nixon was assigned by General Maxwell Taylor as an observer with the 17th Airborne Division on Operation Varsity. Nixon's plane took a direct hit after he and three others got out. He is also one of a very few men in the 101st to earn three Combat Jump Stars on his Jump Wings.
