Answer: Barrackpore

On March 29, 1857, Mangal Pandey, an Indian sepoy of the 34th Native Infantry, killed two British officers - Hugeson and Baugh on parade at Barrackpore near Calcutta. The Indian soldiers refused to obey orders to arrest Mangal Pandey. However, he was later on arrested, convicted and hanged.
This resulted in the revolt of 1857 which later came to be known as 'India's First War of Independence'.
2. Where did Brigadier-General Dyer, a British officer, order his men to open fire on hundreds of innocent, unarmed people in 1919?

On 13th April 1919 people organized a peaceful meeting in the Jallianwala Bagh (Gardens) to protest against the arrest of their local leaders and to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi. Suddenly, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer, having blocked all the exits, ordered his men to open fire without any warning. Hundreds of people died and several injured.

This event is also known as the Amritsar Massacre.

The Indian National Congress (INC) was formed by A.O. Hume in 1885. His main purpose was to provide a 'safety valve' for the growing discontent among the educated Indians. But the organization came to play an important role in independence of India.

The first session of INC was held under W.C. Banerjee in 1885. Seventy-two delegates attended this session. Even now, the INC is one of the biggest political parties of India.
