Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the darkest color cigar wrapper?

Answer: Oscuro

Double Claro is the lightest shade and has a somewhat greenish tinge. Maduro is dark brown, but oscuro is black.
2. What are the three parts of a hand-rolled cigar?

Answer: wrapper, binder, filler

Wrapper, binder and filler are often made with different tobaccos from different countries.
3. What is the name of the tobacco grown in the United States that is most often used for high quality cigar wrappers?

Answer: Connecticut shade

Connecticut tobacco is grown under large tents which protect the leaves from direct sunlight and produce a superior mild to medium bodied tasting wrapper.
4. Which group of names has at least one member who has NOT appeared on the cover of "Cigar Aficionado" magazine?

Answer: In fact, they have all appeared

A great number of celebrities, both men and women, sports stars and politicians have appeared on the cover.
5. What is the finding of the Surgeon General of the United States concerning cigars?

Answer: Cigars are not a safe alternative to cigarettes.

Cigar smoke is not normally inhaled but all tobacco products contain nicotine which is not good for your health.
6. Cigars are categorized by their length and what other measurement?

Answer: ring size

Ring size is measured in 64ths of an inch and represents the diameter of the cigar. A cigar 50/64ths of an inch in diameter and 7 inches long would be classified as a "Churchill" for example.
7. Which is not the name of a size/style of cigar?

Answer: pyromado

Pyromado is a made up word. Robusto cigars are short and thick, lonsdales are long and thin and figurado cigars have a torpedo or pyramidal shape.
8. Who introduced tobacco to Europe?

Answer: Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus found natives in the New World smoking tobacco and brought the product back to Europe with him. The natives had been using the plant for at least two thousand years.
9. Is there any way for an American to buy a Cuban Cigar legally?

Answer: Yes, but only if it is made from "pre-embargo" tobacco.

Since the 1962 embargo, Cuban tobacco is off limits to US citizens even when purchased outside the US. The only way for an American to legally enjoy this product is to smoke a cigar made with tobacco that left Cuba before the embargo. These would be well aged, rare and expensive cigars.
10. You buy a cigar to smoke on your birthday which is three months away. What are the optimum conditions to store a cigar for that length of time?

Answer: 65 degrees F and 70% humidity

Cigars must be kept at close to room temperature and provided with moisture to keep them from drying out. Too hot and dry and they will dry out and crack or crumble, too humid and they may rot. Cigars may be preserved for 50 years or more but very long storage is done at about 40 degrees.
