1. Germany was founded in 1871. Back then, Germany was called the German Empire (Deutsches Reich - a name it kept till 1945). Where was the German Empire proclaimed?

Answer: Versailles

Germany was founded on January 18, 1871, when the German Empire was proclaimed in Versailles, France and Wilhelm I became German Emperor.
2. In 1871 Germany was unified. But unification never is easy especially regarding law. One of the most important projects of the German Empire was the production of a Civil Code. In 1881 a commission was established to work on a common Civil Code that finally resulted in the "Buergerliches Gesetzbuch" (BGB). When did the BGB come into effect?

Answer: January 1, 1900

The BGB came into effect on January 1, 1900. As you can see, it took a very long time for the commission to produce a common Civil Code. But the commission's efforts weren't for nothing. Most of the original BGB is still in effect today (though with many amendments).

How many people (including civilians, soldiers, missing persons, Holocaust victims, etc.) died during World War II according to F. W. Putzger's "Historischer Weltatlas" (1969)?

Answer: About 55 million
