Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2009 a plane ditched in the Hudson River shortly after take-off from LaGuardia Airport in New York. Engine failure resulted in the pilots choosing to come down on the river. What caused the engine failure?

Answer: Bird strike

The aircraft flew into a flock of Canada geese as it was climbing from the airport. Both engines failed and the pilots had little option but to land on the river. Local water craft rescued the 155 passengers and crew. There were no deaths although five suffered serious injuries. The aircraft did not sink.
2. In 1970 a lunar landing had to be aborted when the Apollo 13 space craft was damaged. What was the cause of the damage?

Answer: An oxygen tank exploded

A series of unlikely events led to the failure of the tank. This left the crew of Apollo 13 with the problem of getting back to Earth. The 1995 film "Apollo 13" documents the story. The film produced the memorable line: "Houston, we have a problem."
3. In 1972 a military flight carrying a rugby team (amongst others) crashed in high mountains at over 3,600 metres. The survivors were finally rescued over two months later. In which mountain range did the flight crash?

Answer: Andes

The Uruguayan military flight was carrying 45 passengers and crew. Only 16 survived. There was only limited food carried in the plane and in the end they had to resort to cannibalism in order to survive.
4. An 18-month-old baby, Jessica McClure, was rescued from a well in Texas in 1987. CNN provided around-the-clock coverage of the rescue. How long did it take to rescue her?

Answer: 58 hours

Jessica fell down an eight-inch well pipe and ended up 22 feet below ground. The CNN presence meant that there was world-wide coverage of the rescue. She lost a toe to gangrene and had 15 operations as a result of the accident.
5. Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition to Antarctica met with disaster when their ship Endurance was trapped in ice on the Weddell Sea and crushed. Two years later the whole party were successfully rescued. How was this achieved?

Answer: Shackleton walked into a whaling station

Initially they camped next to where the ship had gone down. Once the ice broke up, Shackleton and his crew sailed in open boats to Elephant Island, some 350 miles from where the Endurance sank. As they were far from shipping lanes and could not expect rescue, Shackleton decided that a small party should sail a further 800 miles to South Georgia in one boat. They successfully navigated to South Georgia and then three of them undertook a 36-hour crossing on foot to reach the whaling station. It took four attempts to rescue those left behind on Elephant Island.
6. In 1838 Grace Darling, a lighthouse keeper's daughter, took part in the rescue of the survivors of a ship wreck on the Farne Islands. Where are the Farne Islands?

Answer: East coast of England

Grace Darling was 22 years old when the 'Forfarshire' was wrecked and she helped her father in the rescue. She died of tuberculosis aged 26. Her legacy includes a poem by William Wordsworth, a lifeboat named after her as well as various books and songs - the hymn "Amazing Grace" was not one of them.
7. Which ship was first on the scene of the sinking of the 'Titanic' in 1912?

Answer: Carpathia

The Californian was the last ship to be in contact with the Titanic prior to the collision. Even though it saw the flares, it did not assist in the rescue. The Carpathia arrived on scene over four hours after the iceberg was struck. A total of 710 were saved, with over double that number perishing.
8. In which decade was the first rescue by an aircraft of someone ditched in water?

Answer: 1910s

The first such rescue took place on Lake Michigan. Hugh Robinson, an early flight pioneer, landed his seaplane on the lake to rescue another pilot in 1911. He himself crash-landed on water in 1912, surviving the crash.
9. 2010 saw the rescue of 33 miners from the 121-year-old San José copper-gold mine after 69 days. Which country is the mine located in?

Answer: Chile

The men were trapped 700 metres underground following a cave-in. After 17 days the survivors were discovered. It took a further 52 days to bring them to the surface.
10. President Carter ordered Operation Eagle Claw, which was an attempt to rescue hostages from the US Embassy in Iran. What year did this take place?

Answer: 1980

The operation was a failure. The mission was aborted in a desert location in Iran after equipment failure. Eight service personnel were killed when a helicopter crashed into one of the other aircraft. The 52 hostages were eventually released through negotiation after 444 days in captivity.
