Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What famous colonel spoke the final words "It's murder, but that's the order."

Answer: Charles Mudge

Mudge's 2nd Massachusetts was ordered, along with its brother regiment the 27th Indiana, to charge against a fortified position in Spangler's Meadow during the hot fight on the morning of the July 3rd. The charge, which killed Mudge along with exacting about 40% casualties on the 2nd Massachussetts alone, is viewed as action that should never have been made, for no gains were made from it except the need for more space in the already growing populations of Civil War cemeteries.
2. Who commanded the V Corps Artillery Brigade at Gettysburg?

Answer: Augustus Martin

His job at organizing the V Corps batteries was crucial in the success of the artillery of that Corps.
3. During the maelstrom that was the Wheatfield fighting, the 17th Maine, upon seeing that their right flank was unprotected, decided to refuse their line along a post and rail fence perpendicular to the famous stone wall on the southern end of Rose's Bloody field of wheat. What three companies, from left to right, made up the refused right wing?

Answer: H, K, C

The 17th Maine's valiant stand at the stone wall, which repulsed three distinct charges from Tige Anderson's screaming Georgians, bought just enough time for the crucial reinforcements of Caldwell's II Corps division to enter the fray. Today their monument stands along the famous stone wall where so many men displayed courage far beyond many of us can comprehend.
4. What was the name of the Corporal from the 6th Wisconsin who, during the first day of the battle, captured an enemy flag at the Railroad Cut?

Answer: Francis Waller

For his valiant services, Waller was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on December 1, 1864.
5. What Confederate brigade was trapped in the Railroad Cut on July 1, 1863?

Answer: Davis

Davis' brigade had the 2nd and 42nd Mississippi, and the 11th and 55th North Carolina. On July 1st, the 2nd, 42nd and 55th were caught in the railroad cut, while the 11th was off foraging. However, the 11th proved their mettle on the 3rd day of the battle during the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble Charge.
6. What was the name of the Colorbearer from the 2nd Mississippi whose flag was stolen from him during the brisk fight at the railroad cut?

Answer: W.B. Murphy

His writing after the war did not seem to show much remorse for his loss, but rather that he had tried his best to hold onto the flag, and had failed with bravery.
7. Who is the Colour Sergeant depicted on the 143rd Pennsylvania Monument?

Answer: Ben Crippen

During the retreat to Seminary Ridge on the afternoon of July 1st, Sergeant Crippen could be seen, flag in hand, turning around periodically to shake his fist in defiance at the enemy. Unfortunately, this story of bravery and gallantry in the face of the opponent came to a dismal end when he was shot down by a rebel bullet.
In his honor, the surviving members of the regiment decided to place his likeness on the face of their monument along the Chambersburg Pike.
8. Name the captain in the 124th New York Regiment whose body was found wedged between two rocks in the Triangular Field.

Answer: Isaac Nichols

Captain of Company E, Nichols' body was not recovered for many days due to how tightly wedged it was between two boulders. On his body was found a bible with the inscription asking its finder, should Nichols be killed, to give the bible back to his father.

He was 22 years old.
9. What was the name of the major of the 124th New York who was killed in the midst of the fighting in the Triangular Field on July 2, 1863.

Answer: James Cromwell

He and his gallant Colonel Augustus Van Horne Ellis were both killed in the action against the 1st Texas.
10. What regiment had the most changes of commanding officer at the Battle of Gettysburg?

Answer: 11th New Jersey

The command changed an astonishing 6 times!
