On January 24, 1972, Shoichi Yokoi was found by two fishermen. Accounts conflict on whether or not he knew the war was over, but it is likely he knew the war had ended nearly 30 years prior, as his reason for not returning to Japan was his shame at having not died in service to the Emperor.

Answer: 1953

James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the chemical structure of DNA, the famous "double helix". They received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962, along with Maurice Wilkins.
3. In which year was the first Barbie doll sold?

Answer: 1959

Despite the belief that Barbie is one of the defining elements of American culture during the 1960s, the doll was actually designed from a German doll called "Bild Lilli", that was produced from 1955 to 1964. Today, Barbie (and all its other versions) is one of the most successful child's toy in the world.
4. Clinical trials for the polio vaccine began April 26th of which year?

The trials went exceptionally well, and in 1955, the first injected vaccinations were performed. Albert Sabin created the oral vaccination, which began use in 1961. Both vaccines have reduced the number of polio cases from about 350,000 per year in 1988 to only 16 by 2016.

On June 11, 1955, during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a racecar, driven by Pierre Bouillin, crashed, sending the car and debris on to the spectators. Eighty-three people, including the driver, were killed and at least 130 injured. After this accident, several nations banned auto racing, and Mercedes Benz, the car manufacturer, didn't participate again until 1989.

Jimmy Hoffa disappeared the afternoon of July 30, 1975, and officially became a missing person on the 31st. No trace of him has ever been found, despite the many leads and theories concerning his disappearance. Hoffa was declared dead on July 30, 1982, after seven years as a missing person.

Between November 17th and 22nd, 1970, the Soviet Union's Lunokhod (Moon walker) 1 rover was driven on the surface of the moon. A previous mission, Lunokhod 0, in February, 1969, crashed into the moon instead of orbiting it.

MTV (Music Television) debuted in the United States on August 1, 1981, with the playing of the video for "Video Killed the Radio Star", by the Buggles. While networks that once exclusively played music videos have mostly moved on to different programming, websites such as YouTube have arisen to fill the void.
