Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1990, what legendary South African man was released from a lengthy prison term?

Answer: Nelson Mandela

Feb. 11, 1990 marked the day Nelson Mandela was freed from prison due to political reasons. He then became a driving force in ending Apartheid across South Africa.
2. 1991 saw a changing of the guard in the National Basketball Association. For the past decade, the league had been dominated by "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird. It was only fitting that this change was as a result of one of them losing. Johnson's Lakers would lose to which of these teams in the NBA Finals?

Answer: Chicago Bulls

It was business as usual for the Lakers as they were victorious in Game 1. The Bulls, however, would win the next four and take the series. Old boss meet the new boss, for "His Airness" Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls had arrived. The Bulls would win six titles in eight seasons and Jordan would lay claim to the GOAT, or the Greatest Of All Time.
3. Often times, when race gets involved, violence ensues. Sometimes, when that happens, it isn't just a scuffle here and there. It becomes a full blown riot. A riot is exactly what happened in 1992 over an issue with a man named Rodney King. In which city did this happen?

Answer: Los Angeles

If I told you this incident started because of King being beaten viciously by a pack of cops, I would not be telling you the entire truth. The truth is that the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department), at the time, had a very long history of corruption and abuse towards civilians.

When the officers got acquitted of all charges despite videotaped evidence showing the brutal beating, things got very heated very fast. Like a huge boil coming to a head and popping, Los Angeles became the scene of some sort of post-apocalyptic movie. Days and days of violence. Scary times LA had back then.
4. The year was 1993. Stone Temple Pilots released their single "Creep". In this song was a line that goes "I'm half the man I used to be...". One man in 1993 lived that line. He had a part of his manhood chopped off by his vengeful wife. Who was that wife?

Answer: Lorena Bobbitt

Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Boy abuses girl in several ways. Girl performs penectomy on boy. This was the saga of John and Lorena Bobbitt. Lorena went to trial and was found not guilty. Was justice served? Who knows? I suppose it depends on who is asked.
5. Heisman Trophy winner, Most Valuable Player in the National Football League, Hall Of Fame inductee, actor, accused wife killer. Whose life timeline was this?

Answer: OJ Simpson

Simpson was one of the best running backs America has ever seen. He then went on to play the loveable Nordberg in "The Naked Gun" movie series. OJ was riding high. That all came to an end in 1994 when he was accused of killing his wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman.
6. The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was the scene of a vicious terrorist act in 1995. Was Timothy McVeigh the culprit?

Answer: Yes

McVeigh killed more than 100 people on the morning of April 19. Then on June 11, 2001, he was executed for his crimes by way of lethal injection. Should have given him the chair. Fry Timmy fry.
7. What was Ted Kaczynski known as?

Answer: Unabomber

Kaczynski was a madman who used the mail services to wreak his havoc. Bomb after bomb was sent by him during a timespan of three decades. He was finally arrested in 1996 and eventually sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
8. Emil Matasareanu and Larry Phillips are two names you may not have ever heard of, but you may have heard of why they are infamous. In 1997, the duo was involved in a huge gunfight with the authorities. In what city did this take place?

Answer: North Hollywood, California

On February 28, 1997 the two attempted to rob a bank and were thrust into a massive shootout with police. Fortunately, the only two deaths that day were the two fools who started the whole thing.
9. What drug for men, which deals with a very personal disorder, was made available to the public in 1998?

Answer: Viagra

Viagra is a drug which helps men who suffer from erectile dysfunction. As men get older, their bodies begin to shut down piece by piece and part by part. As Viagra became public, men all over the world who had problems with intimacy no longer had to live with that problem.
10. Peace in 1969 to violence in 1999. What a difference 30 years makes. Which of these festivals will go down in history for the violence shown as opposed to the music that was played in 1999?

Answer: Woodstock

There are some that would say that the violence at Woodstock 99 was due to the aggressive bands booked to play. Others would say that Capitalist America led to the violence. Charging $4 for a bottle of water during 100 degree heat isn't exactly a calming influence, so to speak. I can't give an answer if I were to be asked. Blame it on the music? Perhaps, but I was at Ozzfest in 1999 and it doesn't get much more aggressive than Slayer, Rob Zombie, and Black Sabbath.

There was no violence that day. Blame the heat and high prices for concessions? Perhaps, but it was hot during Ozzfest and prices were high there too, and again, no violence. I just don't know what caused it all.
