Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the meaning of the name Tecumseh?

Answer: Shooting Star

He was the second son among seven siblings. His mother was called Methoataske and his father was Pucksinwah.
2. His father, Pucksinwah, was killed when Tecumseh was only six years old. At what battle did this happen?

Answer: Battle of Point Pleasant

With his dying breath, he made Tecumseh's older brother, Chiksika promise to train him in the ways of a warrior and to never make peace with the whites. One of his younger brothers (Sauwaseekau) was killed at the Battle of the Fallen Timbers.
3. You may know that Tecumseh was Shawnee, but they are made up of 13 clans. To which clan did Tecumseh belong?

Answer: Panther (M-se-pa-se)

Some of the others are: Owl (M'-ath-wa'), Turkey (Pa-la-wa'), Deer (Psake-the'), Raccoon (Sha-pa-ta') and Snake (Ma-na-to').
4. Tecumseh's younger brother Lalawethika, became known as the Shawnee Prophet. Why?

Answer: He had a vision

Raised without his parents' guidance, Lalawethika (literally: 'he makes a loud noise') never learned sucessfully to hunt or to be a good warrior. He was an alchoholic, he was also blind in one eye from a hunting accident and he had fallen into a deep depression when he had the vision that would change his life forever.

After this experience, he took the name Tenskwatawa and never drank again.
5. Always his brothers' protector, Tecumseh helped spread the message as Tenskwatawa preached for the people to abandon the ways of the whites and return to the old traditions. As their following grew, they moved west and established a new village. What was it called?

Answer: Prophetstown

Originally called Tippecanoe, it was established sometime in 1808. Prophetstown was located in Indiana, near the Tippecanoe and the Wabash rivers. New Echota was the Cherokee capital established around 1825 in Georgia.
6. Tecumseh traveled far and wide in an attempt to unite as many natives as possible to resist the white takeover. This future president took advantage of one such absence to attack and destroy Prophetstown. Who was it?

Answer: William Henry Harrison

Harrison waited until Tecumseh had traveled south. Tenskwatawa took his warriors out to meet him (giving the women and children time to escape), Harrison then burned the village to the ground. Even though they had suffered twice the casualties, Harrison claimed a victory for the U.S.
7. Most of Tecumseh's followers were Shawnee.

Answer: False

As a matter of fact, many of the Shawnee considered him a trouble-maker, and preferred to try to make peace with the whites. Members of the Ottawa, Huron, Winnebago and Objibwa tribes (among others) helped make up the population of Prophetstown. Tecumseh dreamed of uniting all the Indians from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes into one nation.
8. In 1812 America was again at war with the British, Tecumseh and his warriors joined up with the British troops.

Answer: True

The man fought for his country every way he could. The British would eventually crumple under attack and retreat, leaving Tecumseh and his warriors to fend for themselves.
9. Another confrontation between Tecumseh and a future U.S. President happened in 1809 at the signing of which treaty?

Answer: Treaty of Fort Wayne

This treaty gave 3,000,000 acres of land to white settlers of Illinois and Indiana. The negotiations were not meant to include the Shawnee (who had already been asked to leave the area by the Miami) but Tecumseh was incensed that so much land was being sold.

He has been quoted as saying,"No tribe has the right to sell a country, especially to strangers". Later Tecumseh asked Harrison to nullify the treaty, his refusal to do so began what became known as 'Tecumseh's War'.
10. On October 5th, 1813, Tecumseh was killed in what battle?

Answer: Battle of the Thames

He had a premonition of his death the night before this battle. Although noone knows who fired the fatal shot, many took credit. With the Great man gone, the dream of uniting the nations would die.
