1. On what date did the massacre occur?

Answer: November 29, 1864

The attack took place in the southeastern Colorado Territory. An estimated 70 to 163 Indians were killed and mutilated. About two-thirds of that group were women and children.
2. Who led the attack against the Indians?

Answer: Colonel John M. Chivington

John Milton Chivington was born January 27, 1821. He died October 4, 1894. He was a Methodist preacher and a Freemason who spoke out against slavery.
3. What two tribes were attacked?

Answer: Arapaho and Cheyenne

There were between 60 and 200 Indians encamped in the area. Chivington led a force of 700 against the Indians. There were 24 soldiers killed and 52 injured.
4. Who was the chief of the Cheyenne Indians?

Answer: Black Kettle

Black Kettle was born some time in 1803 and died on November 27, 1868. He and his wife were killed at the Battle of Washita Creek, an attack by George Armstrong Custer.

Chief Niwot was born in 1825 and died in 1864. He was killed during the massacre.

Captain Soule and Lieutenant Cramer, commanding Companies D and K, were part of the First Colorado Cavalry. Both Soule and Cramer went against Chivington and ordered their men to hold their fire.

Black Kettle put up an American flag, because he had been told that it would be a sign to the officers that he was friendly. At the beginning of the attack, Black Kettle then raised a white flag, but the soldiers still attacked.

Answer: Yes

Black Kettle never gave up on the idea of peace. He did not join in on the raids that were done in retaliation. He left and returned to the Arkansas river with 80 lodges to seek peace.
10. What writer used a slightly-changed account of the attack in one of his novels?

Answer: James Michener

James Michener used the story in his novel "Centennial", but changed some of the names and locations. The story was also in a mini-series based on the novel.
