Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What shape is a traditional die?

Answer: Cube

Traditional dies are cube-shaped, and have six sides. Each of the six sides is numbered from one to six.
2. Which is not one of the things historically documented as a use of dice in ancient times?

Answer: Naming a child

People believed that dice were controlled by the gods, so they used dice to make some decisions, but there has been no recorded instance of a child's name having been decided by a die roll.
3. What are the circular dots on a die called?

Answer: Pips

All of the pips look the same on each die. Pips are made by drilling a hole in the die, and then filling the hole with paint.
4. On which continent did dice first originate?

Answer: Africa

Dice were invented independently in many cultures, but it is estimated that they were first used in Egypt as early as 6000 BC. Dice have also been traced back to ancient India and Iran.
5. What were dice first made out of?

Answer: Ankle bones of hoofed animals

The ankle bones of hoofed animals (like horses) were often used to make early dice. They were also referred to as "knucklebones". The statement "Roll the Bones" alludes to this.
6. Which number of sides is not commonly seen on a polyhedral die used in role-playing games?

Answer: 18

A 10 sided die is called an decahedron, a 12 sided die is called a dodecahedron, and a 20 sided die was called an icosahedron. The 18-sided die is used very little, if at all. Most dice with over 6 sides are often used for role-playing games.
7. Is there such thing as a sphere shaped die?

Answer: Yes

There is. It is a ball with a hollow octahedral center. A smaller ball rolls around in this and will weigh down one corner, leading to a defined position for the pips.
8. How many sides does a deltoidal icositetrahedron have?

Answer: 24

Each face on a deltoidal icositetrahredron is a kite. There are twenty-four sides on a deltoidal icositetrahedron.
9. Which Roman God/Goddess was believed to be responsible for the outcome of a dice throw?

Answer: Fortuna

Fortuna was the god of luck in Roman Mythology. She was often referred to as "Lady Luck". Jupiter was the supreme god, Juno was the queen of gods, and Minerva was the god of knowledge.
10. Which object likely descended from dice?

Answer: Dominoes

Just like dice, dominoes have pips on them, which signify a number. The Ouija board is used for fortunes, but it is not related to dice in any way. Fortune tellers also often read Tarot cards, but their connection to dice is very small. Playing cards have no known affiliation to dice.
