Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One egg contains more than how many grams of protein?

Answer: At least 6 grams and up to 10

One egg of any size contains at the very least six grams of protein and can contain up to as much as 10 grams. The reason for this dense package of protein is because the egg has to feed the baby chick. Although the eggs sold for human consumption are not fertilized, all the proteins remain present.
2. Eggs contain no fats.

Answer: False

Chicken eggs do in fact contain a fair degree of fat. For example: 1 small egg contains 1.2 grams of saturated fat and a total of 3.7 grams.1 medium egg: 1.4 grams of saturated fat and a total of 4.4 grams.1 large egg: 1.6 grams of saturated fat and a total of 5.1 grams.1 egg will contain about 80 calories with some 5 grams of fat. So if on a diet, more than one egg in a day is not a good idea.
3. Which of the following eggs contain the least fats?

Answer: quail

A quail's egg contains only 0.3 grams of saturated fats and a total of 1 gram. They are, of course, smaller than the others. So if you wanted eggs for breakfast, the chances are that 1 quail's egg would not be sufficient.
4. All eggs contain cholesterol. Do you know roughly how much?

Answer: Approximately 212 mg

The average egg contains 212 mg of cholesterol. This amount has frightened many people off eating eggs because the recommended cholesterol intake is only 300 mg per day. Most of the cholesterol in the body is made by the liver and it is suggested that you can eat one egg a day without harming your cholesterol or other blood fat levels.  Fats and cholesterol are centred in the yolk of an egg.

The egg white is composed of 86% water and 14% protein.
5. What vitamins do eggs contain?

Answer: A, D, E, B group.

Eggs contain vitamins A, D, E, and B group. B2 riboflavin and B12 are especially rich in eggs.
6. If cooked, eggs lose all or most of the amino acids that they contain.

Answer: False

The fact is that eating a raw egg is not the wisest thing to do. The amino acid content of an egg remains the same no matter how you cook it. A cooked egg tastes a whole lot better and, cooked or raw, the nutritional value remains the same. Also, cooking an egg destroys microorganisms (such as salmonella) which may be present in the egg.
7. When hard boiling an egg why should you immerse the egg in cold water immediately after removing it from the boiling water?

Answer: It prevents the 'green ring' from forming around the yolk.

If you hard boil an egg and just leave it, a green ring will form around the surface of the yolk quite quickly. If you have boiled the egg for consumption later you can avoid that green ring simply by immersing the egg/s in cold water until they are thoroughly cooled.
8. Which of the following minerals are contained in an egg?

Answer: Phosphorus, Iron, Zinc

Eggs contain many essential minerals such as phosphorus, zinc and iron. There are also trace elements such as selenium.
9. When one cooks an egg a process called 'denaturing' takes place. What does the term denature mean?

Answer: Changing the structure of protein

When you cook an egg, in any manner, the process of denaturing, (changing the structure of the protein) takes place. Unlike many other foods, vegetables for instance, cooking does not destroy or lessen the quality or quantity of protein in the egg. Nor does it destroy the essential vitamin content.
10. How much bigger than a large chicken egg is an average sized ostrich egg?

Answer: 24 times larger

An ostrich egg weighs in at an average of two and a half pounds, well over one kilogram and equal in volume to about 24 chicken eggs. The ostrich lays between six to eight eggs and each has a shell 0.06 inches thick; strong enough to support the weight of an adult human male.

It will take you 1 hour to soft boil one of these monsters and one and a half hours to hard boil. Needless to say, frying an ostrich egg would be quite a job.
