Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many lights should you use when photographing or video recording a single subject?

Answer: 3

For the best results, you should use a key light (spotlight), a fill light (floodlight), and a backlight. The key light is your main light source. The fill light is used to soften the shadows caused by the key, and the backlight "separates" your subject from the backdrop.
2. What is an 80A filter used for?

Answer: Colour correction

This filter is used when photographing under tungsten lighting (regular light bulbs), without the aid of a flash unit. Tungsten lighting lacks the blue and green spectrum of "white" light. The 80A blue filter corrects this by filtering out the majority of orange and reds.
3. What is the colour temperature of a "Daylight" fluorescent tube?

Answer: 4700 K

Although fluorescent lamps are now available in different colour temperatures, this is the temperature of a basic Daylight tube for the purpose of photography and video production. Colour temperature is measured in Degrees Kelvin (K). 6500 K is the temperature of real daylight at noon.
4. In simple term, when you increase the lens opening (lower F-stop), what happens to your depth of field?

Answer: It decreases

Opening up the lens, creates a tighter depth of field. This means that if you photograph under low-light conditions, your focus will have little tolerance. Using more light, and a higher F-stop means that you have more freedom to zoom and move around without the need to constantly re-focus.
5. A light that has a lens, and can be adjusted as a flood or spot, is called:

Answer: Fresnel

Fresnel, the "s" is silent. The name comes from the Fresnel lens, the type of lens used on this light.
6. You are using a regular film camera and a long (300 mm or higher) telephoto lens. You are photographing an outdoor skateboarding half-pipe competition. Which is the best film to use?

Answer: ISO 800

Using anything less than an 800 film for sports photography is useless. Especially one as fast as skateboarding. You need a high shutter speed to "stop" the action, and prevent blur. Using less sensitive film would require you to use a slower shutter.
(Kodak recommends ISO 800 film for all fast action photography)
7. You are video recording a scene, and have just performed a "pull-focus". What did you just do?

Answer: Changed the focus from a far subject to a close-up subject.

This is done quite often for dramatic creativity. The opposite is called a "push-focus".
8. Which of these shutter speeds is best for photographing a cityscape at night?

Answer: B

"B" is manual. You can hold the shutter open for as long as you want. This lets in the most amount of light. It is this that causes the streaking of car lights in a photo. Always use a tripod and remote shutter control when using the manual shutter setting. If you want to use a fixed-time setting, you will need to use at least 1/2 second, assuming a high sensitivity film or sensor.
9. A "fisheye" lens is also known as a _________ lens.

Answer: wide angle

It is called a "fisheye" because of its extreme convex shape. Fisheye lenses are intended to give a wide view of the area. However, because of their shape, the edges of the photo may be distorted. Wide angle lenses are typically 28 mm. Where as a "normal" lens is 50 mm, and a telescopic lens is 100 mm or more.
10. A star filter is a type of:

Answer: refractor

This type of filter refracts light into the shape of a star.
