Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first US dime design, Draped Bust, has a smooth edge.

Answer: false

The mintage numbers of the Draped Bust dime are extremely low. In the most common year of this series, the mintage is only 165,000. These low mintages were due to the slow pace of the screw presses. Steam would later greatly increase the rate of mintage. The coin has a reeded edge.
2. Why were Capped Bust dimes only struck at the Philadelphia mint?

Answer: No other mints had yet been established

The Capped Bust dime was created by John Reich, minted from 1809 to 1837, and composed of 89.24% silver and 10.76%copper.
3. Were Seated Liberty dimes larger than our recent dimes?

Answer: No

US dimes minted from 1796 to 1807 were 1.1mm larger, those minted from 1809 to 1827 were 0.9mm larger, and those minted 1828 to early 1837 were 0.6mm larger than recent dimes. The Seated Liberty (1837-1891) was the first dime minted at the current size.
4. How many mints coined the Barber dime?

Answer: 4

The Barber dime was coined at the Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco mints from 1892 to 1916. This dime was designed by Charles E. Barber who also designed the quarter and half dollar which bear the same obverse. These coins are nicknamed the Barber series because of the lack of something odd to create a nickname from.
5. What Barber dime has the lowest mintage?

Answer: 1894 S

The 1894 S Barber dime is the rarest of all US silver and gold coins with only 24 coins minted. The San Francisco mint struck these coins to provide a balance needed to close a bullion account. The mint expected that orders would be sent for these coins and did not know they were creating the rarest dime in US history. No orders were ever placed for these coins. Now seeing that these were rare coins, the mint sold some of these to collectors for $25 and the rest were put into bags with other dimes and placed into circulation.
6. Mercury dimes were the only US coins ever to be composed of a mercury alloy.

Answer: False

Mercury dimes were composed of silver and copper. The coin gets its nickname from the portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse. The wings on the sides of her head were meant to represent America's freedom, but this was misinterpreted by the public who thought that this was Mercury, the messenger of the Roman gods.
7. What was the final year Roosevelt dimes were composed of 90% silver?

Answer: 1964

The production of the Roosevelt dime began in 1946, shortly after his death. Roosevelt was placed on the dime because of his support for the March of the Dimes program.
8. Who designed the Roosevelt dime?

Answer: John R. Sinnock

Because his initials appear on the dime as JS, there was an uproar of the citizens of the United States. As World War II had just ended, the people were upset since they thought that the initials stood for Joseph Stalin.
9. Roosevelt dimes minted 1965 to date are silver clad.

Answer: false

Although it is commonly thought that dimes minted from 1965 to date are silver clad, these coins are actually a solid copper core clad in an alloy of copper and nickel. Although all silver was removed from dimes and quarters in 1965, the amount of silver in half dollars was only reduced at that time. The silver was then totally removed in 1971.
10. A Roosevelt dime has been minted at the West Point Mint.

Answer: true

A Roosevelt Dime has been minted at the West Point Mint in 1996 but it was not placed in circulation. The West Point mint struck the dimes for mint sets to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
