Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gaea (Mother Earth) and Uranus (the sky) gave birth to many children, including the cyclopes. What was the name of the strong men and women Gaea bore first?

Answer: Titans

The Titans, not to be confused with the football team, were as tall as trees and very beautiful. Many played important roles in protecting the earth.
2. After Gaea gave birth to many hideous monsters, Uranus mistreated and killed many of them. Gaea asked her beloved son to dispose of Uranus. What was the name of this Titan?

Answer: Cronus

Cronus killed Uranus with a scythe, and the blood poured into the sea. Oddly, Aphrodite, goddess of love, sprang from that blood!
3. Cronus married his titaness sister, Rhea. However, a prophet had told Cronus that one of his children would dethrone him someday. So, he ate all of the kids Rhea bore. Rhea gave birth again, and she saved this god, who later dethroned Cronus. What was this son's name?

Answer: Zeus

Rhea took a rock, and made Cronus believe it was her new baby. Cronus ate the boulder, and vomited up Rhea's other sons and daughters (Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon).
4. After Zeus defeated Cronus in a mighty battle, he married Hera, and had three children with her. One was Ares, god of war, and Hephaestus, forger god. What was the name of Hera's nasty daughter, who shrieked besides Ares' war chariot?

Answer: Eris

Eris, goddess of discord, hardly ever left Ares' side, and was known to cause many mortals emotional pain and suffering. However, some stories state that Hephaestus was not son of Zeus, but Hera alone. Instead, Zeus and Hera had Hebe, the goddess of youth.
5. Poseidon loved Demeter very much, but Demeter was not fond of that moody god. One day, Poseidon confronted Demeter, and demanded that she love him. The earth goddess devised a plan, and told Poseidon that he must make the most beautiful land creature for her. She thought she was safe, for she believed he could only make ocean animals. However, Poseidon did make a lovely animal for her. What was it?

Answer: horse

In some stories, Poseidon created a horse, and gave it to Demeter. Then, Poseidon was so enchanted by his creation that he forget all about the goddess and made a herd of sea-horses for his underwater chamber. However, some legends say that Demeter turned herself into a mare to escape Poseidon, but he turned himself into a stallion and caught her. Out of this courtship came the wise Arion.
6. Leto, a nymph who was courted by Zeus, gave birth to twins on an enchanted island. These twins (Apollo and Artemis) were among the most beautiful immortals ever. What was the name of the island where Leto bore these twins?

Answer: Delos

Some legends say that Leto bore Artemis first, and she assisted her mother in giving birth to Apollo! Ortygia may have been an early name for Delos.
7. Aphrodite, the lovely goddess of beauty, had a son whom she loved very much. This young god carried a quiver of arrows and shot couples with them to make them fall in love with each other. What was the name of this god?

Answer: Eros

Eros is the Greek name for the god Cupid. Cupid is the well-known symbol for the romantic holiday called Valentine's Day.
8. Arachne, daughter of Idmon, could weave so beautifully that people from miles around would come to admire her work. Arachne boasted that she could weave better than the goddess who invented the loom. What was the name of that immortal?

Answer: Athena

Athena challenged Arachne to a weaving contest. Arachne wove a beautiful pattern of rolling hills and fluffy clouds, and the audience admired it greatly. However, Athena wove a cloak of a mighty battle between the gods and the Titans, and it showed war, pain, and suffering.

The crowd was frightened by the pictures, and went into a uproar. Arachne went and hanged herself, and turned into a spider.
9. Demeter had one daughter, and she loved her dearly. This daughter was the goddess of flowers, and was pretty and delicate. Hades fell in love with her, and stole her from her earthly mother. What was the name of the flower goddess whom Hades kidnapped?

Answer: Persephone

Persephone is my favorite goddess! In the myth, Hades took Persephone into the underworld, and Zeus proposed she could be returned to her mother if no food passed through her lips. However, Persephone had eaten six Pomegranate seeds, so she had to stay with Hades for six months out of the year.
10. Artemis is sometimes known as the goddess of the moon, among other things. However, in some tales, which goddess represents the moon and had Helios and Eos for siblings?

Selene fell in love with a shepherd boy named Endymion, and cast him into eternal sleep. She bore him 50 daughters, all pale and lovely as their mother and as sleepy as their father.
