Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What could Atalanta not resist when she was racing her husband-to-be?

Answer: Golden Apples

Abandoned at birth by a father who wanted a son, Atalanta became a great heroine and one of the Argonauts. Unwilling to marry, she finally consented to wed any man who could beat her at a foot race. Such was her fleetness that she would have remained happily single, but the Goddess of Love gave one of her suitors golden apples to scatter on the race course. These were magical, and Atalanta could not resist them. Stooping to gather them in, she lost the contest to her destined husband.
2. Atlas was of which species?

Answer: Titans

Atlas was a Titan who supported the heavens by means of a pillar on his shoulders. He was temporarily relieved of this burden by Heracles, who needed the Titan's aid in procuring the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. Heracles then tricked Atlas into taking his burden up again. In connection with another heroic quest, Atlas divulged the whereabouts of the Graeae to Perseus.
3. Bellerophon was recognized for which heroic feats?

Answer: Taming pegasus, and killing the chimaera

He was the tamer of the flying horse Pegasus and heroic vanquisher of the Chimaera, a monster so fantastic that it has entered our language in the adjective chimerical, describing the improbable product of a wild imagination.
4. Cadmus was the Phoenician founder of Thebes and brother to whom?

Answer: Europa

Phoenician founder of Thebes, brother of Europa, Cadmus went looking for his sister when she was carried off by Zeus in the form of a bull.
5. Castor was the mortal brother to the immortal person named which of these?

Answer: Polydeuces

He was the mortal brother of the immortal hero Polydeuces, together recognized as the Dioscuri or Hero Twins. Polydeuces was considered godly enough to be admitted to heavenly Olympus, while his brother was dispatched to the Underworld as a mere mortal. But Polydeuces interceded on his twin's behalf, on the plea that he could not bear eternal separation. The gods relented to the extent that the two were allowed to remain together forever, spending half the year deep in the earth beneath their shrine in Sparta and the other half on Olympus.
6. Centaurus was the son of Hera and Apollo.

Answer: False

The progenitor of the centaurs was the son of Ixion and a cloud. This unorthodox parentage came about when Ixion, who had thrown his father-in-law into a fiery pit, was purified of the crime by Zeus.
7. Croesus was a _________. What word best describes him?

Answer: King

An historical king of proverbial riches, his ancient realm lies within present-day Turkey. Croesus derived his wealth from gold deposits in the river Pactolus, said to have been left there when another king, a mythological one, washed away the Midas touch.
8. Which of the following was Cronos the father of?

Answer: Zeus

Cronos was the Titan father of Zeus, who usurped him as ruler of the cosmos. This overthrow so enraged the Giants, who like the Titans were sons of the goddess Earth, that they attacked Mount Olympus and almost defeated Zeus and the other Olympians.
9. Which of the following statements describes Daedalus accurately?

Answer: Builder of the Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete
