Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If a cyclist is described as going "a bloc", what is he doing?

Answer: Going as hard as possible

Going "a bloc" means that a rider is giving everything he has and going as fast as he possibly can during a race. This is a strategy that can of course result in a win, but if put into place too early, can see the rider running out of puff and being eventually overtaken.
2. What, in the world of cycling, is an anchor?

Answer: The child of a cyclist

The child of a rider is given that name because it means the rider is anchored to the home in which the child lives, and can't, perhaps as he did in his single days, live all over the globe following the tours. Nor can he tote a school-age child with him wherever he goes. He still gets to and from the tours of course, but usually by plane.
3. What unfortunate condition, in the world of cycling, is a bacon?

Answer: Marks of a road rash on the cyclist

Which means, of course, that the rider has come to grief in a cycling accident somewhere along the line, and skidded along the road for a short while - a rather painful experience that can rip his uniform apart and leave its mark on his body as a reminder.
4. A "bike throw" means that, in the last few seconds of a professional bike race, a rider is allowed to dismount, pick up his bike and hurl it across the line ahead of him.

Answer: False

A bike throw is a tactic in the last few seconds of any bike race, where, if riders are riding neck and neck, they will attempt to give their bikes some extra impetus to cross the line by pushing their arms forward and stretching their backs out as far as possible. Crouching over the handlebars about sums it up.
5. If a rider has completely run out of energy during a bike race, what is this called?

Answer: Bonk

The rider has hit the wall, in other words. This is a condition which can strike a rider suddenly, and he's basically had it. It is caused by a total loss of glycogen in his muscles and liver. This is why it is vitally important for riders in those endurance tours to keep their energy up by drinking specially formulated energy drinks and health bars right throughout the race.
6. What unflattering term do many riders giver their bike helmets?

Answer: Brain bucket

It certainly is apt in that it helps protect the skull during accidents, but it's not the most enticing term. Helmets are an absolute MUST for cyclists.
7. In the world of professional bike racing, what is a brick?

Answer: A slow climber but efficient descender

It's all about gravity after all. Throw a brick in the air and it'll only go a short space before stopping - but then it'll descend at a rather awesome speed. So it is with riders who are slow at climbing, but who can descend quickly.
8. In the world of professional bike riding, what is a broom wagon?

Answer: Support vehicle

Broom wagons are those support vehicles that faithfully accompany professional bike riders on their big tours all over the world. They contain spare parts, tools for mechanical repairs, food, and the rider's luggage for his overnight stays. These vehicle are also known as SAG wagons (support and gear/grub).
9. If a cyclist is described as a diesel rider, what does that mean?

Answer: He has an even energy pace

A diesel rider is one who, though he may not be known for dazzling bursts of speed, can continue at a steady even pace for the entire duration of the race. These are the kinds of support riders essential in any team bike race.
10. What, in the world of cycling, is a door prize?

Answer: Colliding with the open door of a parked car

This is one of the real dangers facing any bike rider on the road. Car drivers appear to have a blind spot when it comes to seeing them, and have a tendency, after parking their vehicles, to open the driver's door without first checking for any unlucky rider heading towards them - and splat.
