Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the counterpart of Scylla?

Answer: Charybdis

Charybdis was the daughter of Poseidon and Gaia; in some myths Scylla was her sister. They both occupied a narrow strait; if sailors were to avoid Charybdis, they still had to get past Scylla, which could prove a difficult task!
2. All of the Gorgons were immortal.

Answer: False

One Gorgon was not mortal, and surprisingly she was perhaps the most famous gorgon, Medusa. Medusa was a beautiful woman but after making love with Poseidon in Athena's temple, Athena cursed her to be so ugly that if anyone looked at her, they would be turned to stone.
3. Who was the monster that Bellerophon fought?

Answer: Chimera

The Chimera was a creature that was part lion, part goat and part serpent. He was slain by Bellerophon, who rode on Pegasus. Bellerophon felt that he should be a god and went up to Mount Olympus. Zeus was angered by this and he sent a gadfly to sting the horse, which sent Bellerophon falling. Echidna was the mother of all monsters. Typhon was the father of all monsters and Lamia, in some myths, was a beautiful queen who became a child-eating demon.
4. The Ichthyocentaurs were set in the sky as the astronomical constellation Capricorn.

Answer: False

They were set as the constellation Pisces. Ichthyocentaurs were creatures with the upper part of a male human, the lower front of a horse and a tail of a fish. They were also said to have lobster claws.
5. Which of the following were not part of the Erinyes?

Answer: Calliope

The Erinyes, or Furies, as mentioned in some myths, were born from the blood of Uranus when he was castrated by Cronos. After the blood fell on the Earth(Gaia), it sprouted the Erinyes. It was said that the Meliae were also born from Uranus' blood. Calliope was one of the group of nine goddesses who were known as Muses.
6. Theseus was the one who killed the Minotaur.

Answer: True

Theseus was one of the sacrifices sent to Crete, however, he did not intend to be sacrificed. Instead, he planned to kill the Minotaur. He did this with the help of Ariadne, a princess of Crete, who gave him a ball of yard and a sword. Using the sword, he killed the Minotaur, and the ball of yarn allowed him to navigate his way out of the labyrinth, where the creature lived.
7. Who was the centaur known for his wisdom and knowledge in healing, training, and kindness?

Answer: Chiron

Chiron was an immortal centaur; he trained some of the heroes from mythology, such as Asclepius. He was injured accidentally in a battle by Heracles; they were fighting against some violent centaurs. After his wound failed to heal, Chiron wished to die. When Zeus saw the injury, he granted Chiron's wish.
8. Who was the guard of the Garden of the Hesperides?

Answer: Ladon

Ladon was a dragon that guarded the Garden of the Hesperides, the goddesses of the evening. He protected the Golden Apples in the Garden, which were believed to be the source of the golden light of sunset.
9. Who killed the Hydra?

Answer: Heracles

Heracles killed the Hydra, a water monster, because it was one of his Twelve Labors. It was said that the breath of the creature was so poisonous that it killed people who inhaled it, and its blood killed on contact. In addition, when Heracles cut off one of the creature's head, two more grew back.

There were at least two versions of the story that recalled the victory of Heracles over the Hydra. While one of the stories suggested that he used fire and a special sword to defeat the creature, the other claimed that he used the beast's own venom to complete the labor.

After dipping his arrows in the Hydra's blood, he used the poison to complete some of his other tasks. Perseus was the slayer of Medusa and Atalanta was part of the Calydonian Boar Hunt.
10. What was the question the Sphinx asked to Orestes?

Answer: What? Orestes never encountered the Sphinx

Orestes never encountered the Sphinx; it was Oedipus who encountered and answered the riddle. Oedipus unknowingly killed his father, Laius, and married his mother. One of the choices which was "What has 4 legs in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 3 in the evening?", was the question that the Sphinx asked to Oedipus.

The Sphinx was said to have a body of a lion and a face of a woman. She asked the riddle to all, and whoever answered the riddle correctly would be saved and not eaten. It would also stop the plague of the kingdom that Laius ruled. Orestes was the brother of Iphigenia and Electra, and the son of the famous Agamemnon.
