quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What revised musical do these songs appear in? "Haven In The Sky" "Speed Dating" "Somewhere, Someplace, Sometime"

Answer: Tell Me On A Sunday (2003)

The original version was performed in 1979. In 1982 it was joined with a ballet and became "Song And Dance."

The 2003 version retains the format of an unnamed British girl visiting America and singing of her disappointments in love, but the lyrics have had a major revision.

"Haven In The Sky": A song about the plane flight from London to New York.

"Speed Dating": She sings of her speed dating experience and what's wrong with all the men she meets there.

"Somewhere, Someplace, Sometime": The final song, when she finally realises she can survive on her own without a man.
2. This fantastic musical contains the following three songs. "Stone The Crows" "Benjamin Calypso" "One More Angel In Heaven"

Answer: Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

'Fantastic' is a synonym of 'Amazing'.

"Stone The Crows": The Pharaoh is singing Joseph's praises and about making him the second most powerful man in Egypt.

"Benjamin Calypso": The brothers are begging for mercy for Benjamin after he is accused of stealing the gold cup.

"One More Angel In Heaven": Reuben and the brothers explaining Joseph's supposed death to Jacob.
3. In what moving musical do these song titles appear? "Pumping Iron" "Next Time You Fall In Love" "One Rock & Roll Too Many"

Answer: Starlight Express

A very 'moving' musical - all the characters are trains and, if you ever see it live, all the actors are on roller blades.

"Pumping Iron": Greaseball sings about how strong and powerful he is. The coaches all swoon around, hoping he'll pick them to race with him.

"Next Time You Fall In Love": The love duet by Pearl and Rusty when they finally realise they should be together.

"One Rock & Roll Too Many": Sung by Greaseball and C.B. after they've crashed in the final race.
4. These songs all come from which lovely musical? "Our Kind Of Love" "Don't Like You" "All The Love That I Have"

Answer: The Beautiful Game

Hopefully 'lovely' gave you the hint towards 'beautiful'.

"Our Kind Of Love": Christine is explaining to Mary about her love for Del, a Protestant boy.

"Don't Like You": Mary and John sing about how they don't like each other -- until they realise at the end that they do.

"All The Love That I Have": John sings this to Mary when he is leaving her and their son to join the IRA in England.
5. These three songs all belong in which Wodehouse-inspired musical? "That Was Nearly Us" "Travel Hopefully" "Half A Moment"

Answer: By Jeeves

ALW based "By Jeeves" on the novels by P. G. Wodehouse.

"That Was Nearly Us": By Honoria and Bertie. Honoria is singing about what might have been.

"Travel Hopefully": Bertie and Jeeves perform a very clever analogy between driving in a car and life.

"Half A Moment": A love duet between Harold and Stiffy.
6. What musical contains these titles? "Magical Lasso" "Think Of Me" "Masquerade"

Answer: The Phantom Of The Opera

No special clues for 'Phantom'!

"Magical Lasso": Joseph Buquet is frightening the ballet girls with tales of the Phantom and warns them to keep their "hand at the level of your eyes".

"Think Of Me": This is the song that Christine sings when Carlotta quits -- she impresses the managers enough to let her perform it live that night.

"Masquerade": The full company sings this at the New Year's Eve Masquerade ball, though the Phantom sings a reprise at the very end.

"Masquerade!
Paper faces on parade . . .
Masquerade!
Hide your face,
So the world will
Never find you!"
7. These three songs come from what virtuous musical? "The Holly And The Ivy" "Lost Souls" "I Believe My Heart"

Answer: The Woman In White

The musical's name is suggestive of purity and thus a virtuous life.

"The Holly And The Ivy": Sung by the congregation during Laura's and Percival's wedding.

"Lost Souls": Sung by the ensemble on the streets of London while Marion is trying to find Walter.

"I Believe My Heart": A duet with Laura and Walter when they first fall in love.
8. These songs provide a great evening's entertainment. What musical do they belong to? "New Ways To Dream" "This Time Next Year" "The Lady's Paying"

Answer: Sunset Boulevard

A 'great evening' begins with a 'sunset'.

"New Ways To Dream": Joe and Norma are watching one of Norma's movies. She sings of how they (the first actors) gave the world a whole new way to dream.

"This Time Next Year": Joe, Betty, Artie and Ensemble at Artie's New Year's Eve party. They all sing about their dreams for the following year.

"Could We Start Again Please?": Mary and Peter wishing that they could go back to the beginning when things were simple and not so frightening.

"A Man On His Own": Barnardo sings of his realisation that his chosen mission will separate him from his fellow man, and that he is destined to be lonely.
