Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Test time! What is the bending of the knees in ballet called?

Answer: plie

This movement is sometimes used in warm-ups at the barre.
2. Now for your second question...I start in fifth position with my right foot in front, bring my right foot up to where my toes are barely touching my left knee and my right knee is bent, and bring my right foot down and close it in the back, putting my left foot in front in fifth position. What did I just do?

Answer: passe

Many dancers confuse a passe and a ritere. In a ritere, my right foot would have gone back in the front after executing the move. But in a pique, a word meaning "pass", my foot passes from the back to the front.
3. My right foot is in a tendu, and my arms are in high third position. I am facing toward a corner (i.e.downstage left or right). What position am I in?

Answer: quase d'avant

Quase d'avants are sometmes a position a dancer uses in intermediate ballet.
4. Vocabulary test! Define the ballet term "battement."

Answer: to beat

A battement is a step in which you move your foot quickly using a beating motion.
5. I am in a recital, and I am upstage right. Where am I on the stage?

Answer: in the back

In the arts, upstage refers to the back of the stage and downstage refers to the front. This is due to the fact that stages used to be built slanted downward.
6. I am taking very small steps with my feet at a fairly brisk pace. What am I doing?

Answer: a bouree

This step in usually used in adagio dances, but can be used in allegro.
7. You've made it this far...I do a jump/turn. One leg comes up, and the other leg crosses it in the air. I land in fifth position. What did I do?

Answer: a tour d'avant

These are not very difficult, used at a climax in the music.
8. I did a glissade. What on Earth does that mean?

Answer: an allegro step in which I do a half-jump and shift my weight

Glissades are allegro, or "brisk and lively." Adagio is the opposite of allegro, or "slow and sustained." If I only shifted my feet, as in the other allegro answer, I would have done a changement.
9. Which of these words is synonymous with sutenu?

Answer: adagio

Again, adagio means "slow and sustained." Antipasto is used in cooking.
10. Last question...your instructor tells you to do a pirouette. Which of these describes your movement?

Answer: turning but not traveling

A pirouette is a popular turn used in ballet and tap.
