Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which end did James Cook sail from Plymouth to Australia and New Zealand?

Answer: Endeavour

Cook captained a scientific expedition to Australia and New Zealand, leaving England in 1768 aboard HMS Endeavour. He was the first person to provide detailed maps of the New Zealand coastline and in April 1770, he and his crew were the first Europeans to reach the eastern coast of Australia. Endeavour is a word from the Old French "mettre en deveir", meaning to "make it one's duty".
2. Which bitter end is closely related to chicory and radicchio?

Answer: Endive

The two main types of endive are "curly" and "broad leaved", both of which work well in green salads, or any recipe which calls for chicory. They make a great salad when combined with pears, walnuts and Gorgonzola cheese as the bitterness of the endive complements the sweetness of the pears.
3. Which end is a life insurance policy which pays out a lump sum on maturity?

Answer: Endowment

There are many different types of endowment policies, but all pay out on reaching maturity, which is normally between ten and twenty years, and many will also pay out in the event of death or serious illness. As they say in the ads, consult your financial advisor.
4. Which end is a surgical procedure in which a camera is inserted into the body, either at one end or the other?

Answer: Endoscopy

Gastroscopy, examining the gullet and colonoscopy, looking at the bowel, are both examples of an endoscopy, where a long flexible tube with a camera and light at one end is inserted into the body. Obviously the procedure works best if the camera and light are on the end which is inserted! The word "endoscopy" is derived from the ancient Greek words for internal (endo) and to see (scopy).
5. Which end is used by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as a conservation status?

Answer: Endangered

The conservation status of a species is broken down into three categories and eight sub categories. The least serious is Lower Risk, which includes "Least Concern", "Conservation Dependent" and "Near Threatened", followed by Threatened which encompasses "Vulnerable", "Endangered" and "Critically Endangered" and finally Extinct which is broken down into "Extinct In The Wild" and "Extinct". Endanger is made up of the Latin for in (en) and a middle English word "daunger", meaning power or peril.
6. Which end describes both a form of motor sport and the driver's ability to make it to the end of a race such as "24 hours of Le Mans"?

Answer: Endurance

The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) World Endurance Championship is a fascinating series, pushing both man and machine to their limits. Races include "6 hours of Spa-Francorchamps" in Belgium, "6 hours of Silverstone" in UK, "1000 miles of Sebring" in USA and "24 hours of Le Mans" in France. Endure is derived from the Latin word "induro", meaning to make difficult.
7. What end would one use to describe the "Bosea cypria", a shrub native to the island of Cyprus?

Answer: Endemic

Other examples of endemic species include the blue bear of Alaska, the nettle leaved hydrangea of Japan and the many species of lemur in Madagascar. The word endemic is derived from the Greek "endemos", meaning native or dwelling in a specific place.
8. What end describes what Ozzy Osbourne did for "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" and Snoop Dogg did for "Hot Pockets"?

Answer: Endorsement

Amazingly, the answer wasn't "end their careers". Celebrity endorsements are prized within the advertising world, and judging by the examples in the question, the more bizarre the pairing, the more it sticks in the mind of the consumer. Other oddities include Bob Dylan and Victoria's Secret, John Cena and Crocs, David Beckham and GO3 fish fingers and that man Snoop Dogg again, endorsing Norton anti virus software. Endorse comes from the Latin "dorsum", meaning "back", and also gives us "dorsal" as in a shark's dorsal fin.
9. Which end would one need an appointment with, if suffering from Cushing's Disease?

Answer: Endocrinologist

An endocrinologist specialises in all things hormone related, including the many glands and tissues in the human body which produce hormones. Apart from Cushing's Disease, these doctors also treat conditions such as diabetes, menopause, Addison's disease and certain types of cancer. Endocrine means secreting internally and comes from the Greek "krinein", meaning to separate or distinguish.
10. Which end would end the quote by Shel Silverstein, "There are no happy -----"?

Answer: Endings

Hopefully this is a happy ending with a full ten out of ten. Shel Silverstein was an American author and poet, known mainly for his children's books such as "Runny Babbit" (2005), "Don't Bump The Glump" (1964) and "Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?" (1964).

He was also a talented songwriter and penned hits such as "25 Minutes To Go" (1962) and "A Boy Named Sue" (1969), both of which were hits for Johnny Cash and "Sylvia's Mother" (1972) and "The Cover Of The Rolling Stone" (1972), both made famous by Dr. Hook.
