Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote the smash hit 'RENT'?

Answer: Jonathan Larson

Jonathan Larson did indeed create this award-winning show, which premiered shortly after his untimely death in 1996.
2. Which of the following did Bertolt Brecht NOT write?

Answer: 'Marat-Sade'

Brecht was famous for trying to create an intellectual (as opposed to emotional) response in his audience members by endowing his characters with unsavory traits. Peter Weiss accomplished this in his 'The Persecution and Assassination of Jean Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade'. Just read it and you'll understand!
3. Which of these men is not considered a writer in the 'Theatre of the Absurd'?

Answer: Sam Shepard

Though some of Shepard's plays are definitely 'out there', his style is considered 'super-realistic' or 'hyper-realistic'.
4. Who wrote the crazy suspense satire 'The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful'?

Answer: Charles Ludlam

Prominent in the gay and lesbian theatre movement, Ludlam wrote this play for two men to play eight parts, including a lord, a lady, a cripple, and a maid. I'd love to see this show!
5. Okay, so it failed on Broadway, but 'Chess' is one of my favorite musicals. Who did NOT sing on the original concept album?

Answer: Judy Kuhn

Kuhn is also known for her performance as Cosette in the Broadway version of 'Les Miserables', and she was also the singing voice of Pocahontas in Disney's version of the movie.
6. The Lerner and Lowe musical 'My Fair Lady' is based on a play by George Bernard Shaw. Name this play.

Answer: 'Pygmalion'

I'm able to tie this one into my mythology quizzes! Shaw wrote of a man who transformed a simple flower girl into the woman of his dreams. In Greek mythology, a sculptor named Pygmalion created a statue that he fell in love with. Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, granted the statue life and named her Galatea. Pygmalion married her and, though accounts vary, probably lived happily ever after.
7. What was the fate of Blanche's husband in Tennessee Williams' 'A Streetcar named Desire'?

Answer: He was a homosexual who killed himself

Always issues for the homosexual Williams, marriage and courtship played large roles in his works. Blanche's marriage was brief and unhappy. Also, Laura, in 'The Glass Menagerie' is betrayed by the Gentleman Caller.
8. Who wrote the rioutous comedy 'Picasso at the Lapin Agile'?

Answer: Steve Martin

Martin's 'Picasso' is a hilarious tale in which Picasso (yes, THAT Picasso) meets up with Albert Einstein and Elvis Presley, among others. And by the way, 'Lapin Agile' means 'Deft Rabbit' in French!
9. The play of which writer inspired the musical 'Hello, Dolly!'?

Answer: Thornton Wilder

Wilder wrote 'The Matchmaker', which served as the inspiration for the popular musical that starred Carol Channing and, later, Barbra Streisand.
10. 'Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk' opened off-Broadway. True or false?

Answer: true

This unconventional show, along with 'RENT' (yes, I AM a RENThead) opened off-Broadway in 1996, and they both quickly moved to the Great White Way.
