Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You may think you've seen us as flashes of light in the night forest, or maybe it was just your eyes playing tricks on you. What? You think we have Irish brogues? Let me tell you something boyo, the Irish learned to speak from us! Which elemental spirit are we?

Answer: fairies

Fairies are generally considered to be human-like creatures with magical powers. Though now considered to be very small, they were originally said to be as big as humans. One common Celtic theme is that they were forced into hiding by invading humans. Sometimes considered malevolent, they are at the least considered mischievous.
2. All the Germanic peoples have heard of me. Some thought they saw me as a dragon, others saw a water spirit that you might call a mermaid. Do you know my name?

Answer: nixie

Nixies are often thought of as being shapeshifters, so one could appear as a dragon or a mermaid. There are also similar figures in England and Scandinavia. A nixie named Melusine, seen in some German coats of arms, is depicted as a mermaid
3. No, I didn't come here to sell you cookies; don't be insulting! I might help with chores around the house if you leave a bit of food out for me at night. But if you call it a 'payment' I will be out of here in a flash! Say my name and be quick about it!

Answer: brownie

Brownies are related to hobgoblins. Though considered an evil spirit they don't usually perform malevolent deeds and can be useful around the home; they can be petulant and will storm off in a huff if they feel misused. They inhabit the British Isles where, incidentally, the Brownies of the Girl Guides do not sell cookies as a fund raising device as do the Brownies of the American Girl Scouts.
4. Well, mr. miner, that's quite a long tunnel you've dug. While you may be invading my underground home, I'm willing to be nice and let you know if your tunnel is about to fall in. How I'll do it is how I got my name, which is ___?

Answer: knocker

Knockers are earth spirits from Welsh and English lore. They dress as miners and might steal miners' food or tools. They may knock on mine walls to warn of impending collapse. In America they are known as tommyknockers.
5. Watch out there, pal! That fire of yours is about to get out of control, but I can help you put it out. Fire doesn't bother me at all, in fact some people think it brings out the best in me. What is my name?

Answer: salamander

The salamander fire spirit may be contrasted with the small lizard of the same name, although the amphibian Salamandra salamandra is known as the fire salamander. The salamander fire spirit has been commented on by Pliny the Elder, Aristotle and Leonardo da Vinci. Pope Alexander III was said to have a tunic made from supposedly fireproof salamander skins. The Talmud mentions that anyone smeared with salamander blood will be immune to fire and alchemists thought a fire salamander could put out a fire with coldness emanating from its body.
6. I wouldn't mind cozying-up to that Tolkien fellow. He wrote page after page about the forests where I dwell. Though he wrote about some of the male tree spirits, we women were there, too. I'm surprised he didn't notice us, because the males of your species consider us remarkably attractive. Eurydice and Erato are two of my many sisters. Who am I?

Answer: dryad

Dryads are female tree spirits, or nymphs. They are considered minor deities who animate nature. Beautiful and shy, they are considered friends of the goddess Artemis and will punish any human who damages a tree without first appeasing the tree-nymph who lives in it.
7. You might not recognize me if you saw me. Small wonder, since as an air spirit I'm usually invisible. But Paracelsus the alchemist knew me and told other alchemists about me. Alexander Pope, in his pathetic attempt at poetry, said women turn into elementals like me because their spirits are too full of dark vapors to ascend into the skies. What did he know? Do you know what I'm called?

Answer: sylph

Three of these are water spirits, the sylph is the elemental of air. Pope, in his poem "The Rape of the Lock", was poking fun at Paracelsus and alchemists in general. While sylphs don't have a substantial mythology, Rosicrucianism mentions sylphs in its hermetic philosophical writings.
8. We may not be big but we're well-liked by the Germans. We might help around the house or aid sailors during a voyage. You'll find an element named after us on the periodic table. Do you know who we are?

Answer: kobold

Kobolds are sprites of Germanic mythology, appearing as a human, an animal, a candle or fire. They will help around the house unless insulted (much like their brownie brethren) or they may be found in mines. The element cobalt comes from their name; miners blamed kobolds for the poisonous ores (usually arsenic) that contained cobalt. Another kobold, the German Klabautermann, spends its time aboard ships.
9. Sometime, if you're walking in the forest, you might see me as a horse who lets you ride him. Or you might see a young woman swimming in a pool who invites you to join her. But be forewarned: either way I'll drown you in a heartbeat. Do you know my elemental name?

Answer: kelpie

Kelpies are water spirits who take the form of a horse. They will let someone climb on their back, which then becomes sticky and they drown the rider at the bottom of a river or pool. Or they may shapeshift into the form of a young woman to lure men into the trap.
10. You can call me a ragamuffin if you like but I'm more than that. I'm a rag-tag collection of thoughts and bits of magic and I can't stay around long. Sometimes I'm a guide or I bring needed information. Oh, I can't stay here any longer, the colors are too intense in your world! Before I go, can you say my name?

Answer: tatterdemalion

Tatterdemalions are creatures of air and light. They have little substance and cannot engage in physical contact. They can relay information or offer counsel and have an urgency about them because they are short-lived.
