Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first five questions are based on "Spellbound." What was Cal's profession?

Answer: Photographer

Calin Farrell was a famous photographer from New York, who decided to take a vacation in Ireland. He ended up meeting the woman he was destined to be with, a witch named Bryna. She told Cal that she had been watching his life and was proud of his achievements. Bryna had a darkroom built onto her house for his work.
2. "Spellbound." What unique feature did Alasdair possess?

Answer: Black eyes

Alasdair, the evil wizard infatuated with Bryna, did not fit the stereotypical mold. He was strong and handsome and had golden hair. But he possessed black eyes, and no matter how kind he pretended to be, his eyes remained cold and dark. Alasdair chose to be evil and wanted Bryna for himself.
3. "Spellbound." When Cal was eight, he suffered under a neighborhood bully. What did Bryna want to do to the bully?

Answer: Turn him into a toad

Cal was eight when he had a bully, but Bryna was only four. She felt the need to cast a spell that would change Henry Belinski, the bully, into a toad. Cal ended up fighting him and broke the bully's nose.
4. "Spellbound." If Cal did not admit his love for her, Bryna would be forced to remain with Alasdair for a thousand years. What was her plan if that turned out to be the case?

Answer: She would poison herself

Bryna knew that she would never let herself be trapped in Alasdair's world, so she devised a plan. She wore a necklace that she had filled with poisonous powder. Bryna would rather die than be Alasdair's for a thousand years. When the time came and Cal still did not profess his love, she opened her necklace and prepared for the worst. Thankfully, Calin arrived and saved her by finally admitting his true feelings.
5. "Spellbound." How did Bryna end all of her incantations? "As I will..."

Answer: "So mote it be"

Bryna was a powerful witch, but her power dwindled as the years passed, living without the love of her life. She ruled the wind and fire, but knew she needed Calin to reach her strongest potential. She cast many spells in the story, and most of them kept Cal safe. She ended each of her spells with "As I will, so mote it be."
6. The next five questions are all about "Ever After." When Conal drew a picture of Allena, what did he add to her features?

Answer: Faerie wings

Conal was so intrigued by Allena that he began to draw a picture of her. He worked hard for several minutes and then realized that he had added faerie wings to her back. She ended up posing for him, and he created a sculpture of her entitled "Allena of the Faeries."
7. "Ever After." Why was Conal so shocked to see Allena wearing the beautiful pendant?

Answer: He had thrown it into the ocean

At the beginning of the tale, Allena visited a shop in Ireland called "Charms and Cures" and became transfixed with the pendant. The kindly old woman that sold it to her was actually the spirit of Conal's mother, who had passed away years earlier. It was destined that the pendant end up with Allena. Out of anger, Conal tossed the pendant, which he had inherited, into the sea.

It magically ended up with Allena.
8. "Ever After." What was the name of Margaret's business?

Answer: A Civilized Adventure

Allena worked for her stepsister, Margaret, and hated the boring job. She was seen as an outcast in her snooty, successful family. They treated Allena like an alien from another world who simply did not belong. Conal made an interesting point when he asked her, "Who would want a civilized adventure?"
9. "Ever After." Which day was Conal fated to be with his true love?

Answer: The Summer Solstice

Every generation of Conal O'Neil's family met at the circle of stones on his island, named Dolman. On the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, the destined couple would meet and spend the rest of their lives together. The pendant that Allena wore once belonged to Conal's mother, grandmother, and so on. He resisted the idea of not having control of his own life.
10. "Ever After." Conal finally realized how much Allena meant to him. What chore did Allena do that helped him realize his true feelings?

Answer: She had painted the shutters

Conal appreciated everything Allena did- she brought in flowers and fixed the shower nozzle, among other things. But the chore that took Conal over the edge was the fact that Allena had painted the shutters. When he saw them, it was the only thing he could think of. The two had argued beforehand, yet Allena had seen to his shutters. Conal went to her and professed his love.
11. The final five questions all pertain to "In Dreams." Kayleen noticed something odd in Flynn's home. What item(s) truly stood out?

Answer: His large array of PEZ dispensers

Flynn's tastes included several different styles. His large home was filled with so many diverse items, such as Waterford bowls and Dresden vases. But what Kayleen Brennan really noticed were all of the different PEZ dispensers around the house. His eccentricity "tickled" her humor.

He had many different tastes because he had been alive for so long, under the spell of the Keepers, the guards of magic.
12. "In Dreams." What was Kayleen's occupation?

Answer: She was an antiques dealer

Kayleen woke up in the room Flynn had placed her in and surveyed her surroundings. She loved it, and even went as far as calling it a "fairy tale of a room." Kayleen, as an antiques dealer, understood good taste, and knew that Flynn was a man of great taste. Her family owned "Brennan's of Boston," an antique shop, for almost a century.
13. "In Dreams." Flynn was a powerful magician. Which of the following spells did he not perform in the story?

Answer: He transformed into a horse

Flynn heard a knock on his door and teleported there to save time. This was because he had only one week out of a hundred years to live as a man. He also made dinner for Kayleen, which included all of her favorite foods. When Kayleen grew weary of his odd behavior, she grabbed a knife to defend herself.

When she looked at it, he had turned it into a rose. Flynn never turned into a horse, however.
14. "In Dreams." Every short story had an animal as a pet. What was the animal companion for this story?

Answer: Dilis the horse

Dilis belonged to Flynn. He was loyal and had a white coat. Hugh belonged to Conal in the story "Ever After." He knew Allena and Conal were fated to be with one another. Hecate was a beautiful black cat. In the story "Spellbound," Bryna owned her. There was never a Horris the bird.
15. "In Dreams." What part of Kayleen did Flynn cast a spell on to see her true feelings?

Answer: Her tears

Flynn had lived alone for so long that it was difficult for him to tell different emotions apart. So when Kayleen cried at one point, he placed his finger under her eye and cast a spell. If her tears were of happiness, the tear would turn into a diamond. If they were from sadness, they would turn to ash. At one point Flynn pulled back a diamond because he had made Kayleen so happy.
