Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The protagonist of the book is Yossarian, a bombardier in the US Army Air Corps. Yossarian directs his pilots to take the wildest evasive action possible while on missions. Another bombardier, however, takes no evasive action whatsoever, making him hated by everyone else. What is the name of this peanut-brittle eating airman?

Answer: Havermeyer

Havermeyer is a fat, slovenly man who shoots field mice with a stolen pistol. When Yossarian refuses to fly any more missions, Havermeyer secretly asks for help getting out of flying more missions himself.
2. Major Major Major was an unfortunate man, born with a ridiculous name and an uncanny likeness to Henry Fonda. On Pianosa, Major Major almost fits in for the first time in his life. That is, until the squadron commander is killed and Major Major is promoted in his place. What was the name of Major Major's predecessor? (He's referred to, but never appears in the book)

Answer: Major Duluth

Colonel Nevers was Colonel Cathcart's predecessor, who only required airmen to fly 45 missions. Lieutenant Coombs was Chief White Halfoat's predecessor as assistant intelligence officer, and was killed on his only combat mission. Colonel Moodus was General Dreedle's son-in-law.
3. One of the most obnoxious characters in the book was Captain 'Aarfy' Aardvark, Yossarian's navigator. He gets lost on every mission, directing the pilots over heavy concentrations of enemy fire. He laughs at Yossarian's panic, even when Yossarian was wounded. His most horrifying action, however, was the rape and murder of a poor Italian girl. What was her name?

Answer: Michaela

Luciana was one of Yossarian's girlfriends. The 'maid in the lime colored panties' was another character.

In one of the most powerful chapters of the book, Yossarian walks through Rome, disgusted at the poverty and injustice he sees. Desperate for love, he goes to visit Michaela, an unattractive maid at the officers' apartment. When he arrives, he finds that Aarfy has raped her and threw her out the window. He is unable to convince Aarfy that he has done anything wrong and will go to prison. Soon, MPs bust open the door...and arrest Yossarian for being AWOL.
4. Major Major was not the only hermit on the island. The group's PR officer ran off and hid in the woods after Chief White Halfoat threatened to kill him. Though the Chief was only joking, no one bothered to tell this unpopular officer that it was safe to return. What was his name?

Answer: Captain Flume

When Captain Flume returned to his trailor, the Chief took that as a sign of his own impending mortality and checked into the hospital to die.

Captain Black was the obnoxious intelligence officer, Captain Wren was one of the join squadron operations officers, and Lieutenant Mudd, of course, was the Dead Man in Yossarian's tent.
5. When Major Major refused to see anyone about anything, he left an enlisted man in de facto control of the squadron. The poor man had to deal with a CID man looking for Washington Irving, a dead man in Yossarian's tent, and a dead doctor who won't stop complaining. What is the name of this put-upon soldier?

Answer: Sergeant Towser

Towser was played by Norman Fell in the 1970 movie.

Corporal Whitcomb was the chaplain's assistant, Sergeant Knight was a gunner in Yossarian's plane, Corporal Kolodny worked for Captain Black.
6. Many of Yossarian's friends were killed in the novel, but very few of them actually died in combat. Which of these soldiers died during a combat mission?

Answer: Nately

Nately was killed over La Spezia when Dobbs accidentally collides with his plane. McWatt accidentally kills Kid Sampson by running him through the propeller of his plane. McWatt rams his plane into a mountain in remorse. Hungry Joe is suffocated by Huple's cat, which sleeps on his face.
7. Milo is promoted to mess sergeant by Major --de Coverly. The original mess sergeant had been demoted to corporal for poisoning the squadron. Who was this cook?

Answer: Corporal Snark

Snark put soap chips into the sweet potatoes to prove the men had no taste. Though it caused an outbreak of diarrhea, Snark proved himself justified, since the men all came back for seconds.

Fortiori was the soldier whose bed Yossarian took over in the hospital. When Yossarian convinced the psychiatrist he was crazy, they sent Fortiori home by mistake. Gus and Wes were the two guys from the motor pool who ran the medical tent for Doc Daneeka.
8. Yossarian was an outsider in many ways. He didn't want to fight, he was paranoid, and many thought he was crazy. Something often overlooked is that he was also an outsider racially. What was Yossarian's ethnicity?

Answer: Assyrian

Yossarian mentions this early on. Joseph Heller said he did this to make Yossarian as much of an outsider as possible, though he later found out the name 'Yossarian' was actually Armenian.
9. Throughout the book, several generals fight each other for command of the region. At the end of the book, which general wins the struggle?

Answer: General Scheisskopf

Throughout the book, General Peckem fights to take over General Dreedle's command. At the end of the book he succeeds, only to have his former subordinate, Scheisskopf, promoted above him.

For a laugh, look up 'Scheiss' and 'Kopf' in a German-English dictionary.
10. Here's a tough one: who was the doctor for Dunbar's squadron?

Answer: Dr. Stubbs

Dr. Stubbs grounded any man on sick call and was later transferred to the Pacific for causing trouble. Dr. Daneeka was the doctor for Yossarian's Squardon, Dr. Sanderson was a psychiatrist.
