Yoshitoki Kuninobu and Shuya Nanahara are close friends, who grew up in the same foster home. During a fishing trip, they discuss which girls they find attractive. When Shuya asks if Yoshitoki likes Yuka, he laughs, and says unlike Shuya, he doesn't like fat girls. Shuya gets defensive and asks if he thinks Kazumi is fat, then backtracks and says she is plump. Kazumi is not in their class, she plays the saxaphone in Shuya's rock club.

Answer: Noriko Nakagawa

Shuya wakes up in the strange classroom, and can't work out why everyone has been unconscious. He notices that the windows appear to be boarded up, then he notices the collar on Noriko, who is slumped over her desk. He probably notices her first because the seating arrangement in the classroom is the same as on the bus, and Noriko was sitting near Shuya on the journey.

Answer: Unwrapping and eating chewing gum

Shogo is the only class member who seems calm at these events. Of course, we later find out that this is not his first time in the program. Shuya notices him pulling some chewing gum out, and slowly chewing it. While Shuya does notice a faint smile on Shogo's face, he doesn't see him laugh.

Mr Hayashida was in charge of the class, and had been killed when Sakamochi took over. His mutilated body was brought in front of the class, and he was shot a further two times in the head when the class wouldn't quieten down.

Answer: Tahara

Tahara, Kondo, and Nomura are the three soldiers who assist Sakamochi in his explanations, and who protect him and keep "order" in the classroom. Tahara is referred to as "the frivolous one", Kondo as "the boyish one", and Nomura as "the uncharismatic one". Tahara shot Noriko in the leg because she left her desk to help Yoshitoki, after he was shot by all three soldiers.

20 minutes after the last student leaves the school, the 200 meter area around the school will become a forbidden zone. Any student who enters a forbidden zone, or lingers too long in a forbidden zone, will be killed when their collar explodes.

Shuya knows that the class will all be wary of Kawada, Mitsuko, and Kiriyama, because Kiriyama and Mitsuko hang out in "tough" groups, and because Kawada is a loner. Shuya thinks that Kiriyama and Mitsuko will probably try to meet up with their gangs, but Kawada has no friends to meet up with.

He tries to dismiss his thoughts, because he knows that's how the government wants him to think.

Megumi was shot by Akamatsu's crossbow as she left the school. When Shuya sees her body, he is shocked that some of his classmates have already begun to play the game. It occurs to him that she may not be dead, but as he goes to check, he is shot at as well.

Answer: Takako Chigusa

Akamatsu lays in wait outside the school as soon as he regains his composure. He had been bullied throughout his life, and he knew how ruthless and cruel the others could be. He decides his best shot at survival is to kill as many of the students as he can before they even get into the game. Takako manages to get away from him - unsurprising given that she's a track star, as does Sho Tsukioka.

Niida has his own day pack, and he also picks up Akamatsu's and Mayumi Tendo's after their deaths. Niida accidentally kills Akamatsu when he sees him with Mayumi's body. He then tries to console himself with the thought that Akamatsu had killed Mayumi, so it was okay that he killed him.

Answer: Boomerang

Noriko has a boomerang, and Shuya has an army knife. In the film version, Noriko has a pair of binoculars, and Shuya has a pot lid. The film version seems to give less useful weapons to a number of students than in the book. Shuya discovers the two weapons while looking through the day packs for something to help the wound in Noriko's leg.

Answer: Southern Tip

Kiriyama manages to get notes to the members of his "gang", asking them to meet him on the Southern tip of the island. When Mitsura arrives, he realises - too late - that Kiriyama hasn't asked him there to join forces. He had already killed three other members of the group - Izumi Kanai, Hiroshi Kuronaga, and Ryuhei Sasagawa - and Mitsura was his next victim.

Sakura and Kazuhiko were a couple, who had managed to agree a place to meet when they left the school. Realising that they were going to have to either die or kill each other, they decided to commit suicide together.

Mizuho and Kaori were Megumi's closest friends, and she had a crush on Shuya. Megumi was hiding in a house, which Mitsuko also tried to shelter in. Megumi was discovered when Mitsuko heard her cell phone ringing, and made Megumi her first victim.

Houses and residential areas are represented by blue dots. Shuya also notices on the map that the island houses a medical clinic, a firestation, a town hall, a lighthouse, and a fisherman's coop. The maps are essential to the students, because they need to navigate around the forbidden zones.

Noriko and Shuya are surprised by Sakamochi's announcement, during a conversation about Shuya's crush. The announcement also details the areas which are to become forbidden in the next six hours.

Ms Anno took care of Shuya and Kuninobu at the foster home. After the accidental death of Oki Tatsumichi, Shuya keeps repeating "Oh god, god", and it reminds him of his foster mother's devout Christianity, and how it didn't stop her from being raped by Sakamochi.

Kawada shoots Kyoichi's arm off with the shotgun, to try and stop him from killing Shuya. Kyoichi picked up his gun with his other hand, and shot at Kawada, so Kawada shot him in the stomach. This was at very close range, and with a shotgun, so Kyoichi was blown backwards with a large hole in his stomach.

Answer: Yuko Sakaki

Yuko was hiding in the bushes during the altercation between Shuya and Oki. She didn't see everything as it happened, but she did see them struggle, resulting in Oki getting an axe in his head. She fled, and her fear and mistrust of Shuya later led to the tragedy in the lighthouse.

Answer: He says she and Shuya make a cute couple

Kawada seems to think that Shuya and Noriko are a couple, probably because they seem so close. At the start of the book, Shuya just wants to protect Noriko because he knew how much Kuninobu cared about her, but as the game progresses, he begins to see what his friend saw in her.
