They had a one night stand that the White House staff managed to get incriminating photographs of. Rachel's father is running for President in a hotly contested race.

We are led to believe that Tench is the mastermind behind the meteorite conspiracy. We are futher led to believe that Tench arranges Pickering's murder at the meeting. However, in the end we learn that it is the other way around.

The NRO director is trying to influence the outcome of the presidential election through an elaborate plot to make NASA have a major success. His plan backfires, and we are led to believe that in spite of the near disaster caused by the scheme, the incumbent Zack Herney will be re-elected.
