Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The novel opens with a burial. Who is in the casket?

Answer: Lily

In the prologue of the book, Clara, Mariah, Liz and Kendra are gathered at Mariah's cabin. They are preparing for a burial, reminiscing and praying as they wait for the casket to arrive. We learn that it is Lily in the casket, a young girl who died years ago at the Mission residential school. Clara is haunted by the death of Lily and the women are relieved that they have been able to bring her body home.
2. Kenny often runs away from the school, only to be brought back and beaten for his escape attempts. When he finally does permanently escape, which family member aids him?

Answer: Uncle

Kenny often runs down to the dock and tries to escape the Mission school by boat. When he is caught, he is beaten, his head is shaved and he is forced to wear a dress and a sign that says "I am a runaway." This doesn't deter him and he tries to run away again.

He takes a small boat and is able to escape to Port McNeill where his uncle is. He pushes the boat into the water to make the nuns and brothers at the school think he has drowned. He is able to locate his uncle and his uncle takes him home to his mother. Kenny never returns to the school.
3. When Lucy turns sixteen, she is given her freedom from school. With no family and nothing but a bus ticket to her name, who does she try to find?

Answer: Maisie

When children turn sixteen they are no longer required to attend the school and they are either returned to their families or given a bus ticket to Vancouver. Lucy is given a bus ticket and sent away from the school. When she arrives in Vancouver she is completely overwhelmed and naïve.

The rules at school are very harsh but do nothing to prepare her for life outside the school. After a near miss with a pimp named Walt, she finds Maisie, a friend who left the school a year before she did. Maisie takes her in and helps her find work.
4. Girls at the residential school are given the task of cleaning. The female survivors joke about their cleaning skills and end up working at which seedy hotel?

Answer: The Manitou

Maisie works at a cheap and filthy hotel named the Manitou that is frequented by prostitutes. Maisie, Clara and Liz clean rooms there and Maisie is able to get Lucy work cleaning there as well. They joke that one of the main things they learned at the school was how to scrub and clean well. Lucy is obsessive about cleanliness and doesn't mind the work. With Maisie's help, she acclimatizes to life outside of the school.
5. Maisie has too much trauma to overcome from life at the residential school and ends up taking her own life. How does she do this?

Answer: Drug overdose

Maisie, like many of the children at the school, was sexually and physically assaulted and this leaves deep pain that she cannot overcome. Unbeknownst to Lucy and to Maisie's boyfriend, Maisie is leading a double life. She seeks out the pain of the assaults she endured as a child and is paid for sex by an older man who she asks to hurl insults at her.

She burns the money she makes. The older man introduces her to heroin. She intentionally takes a large dose of heroin and takes her own life.
6. Lucy decides to complete her schooling with the hopes of becoming what?

Answer: Nurse

Lucy gets her high school equivalency and pursues college courses to become a nurse. Just as she starts her nursing program, she meets up with Kenny, who she knew and liked when they were at school together. The two sleep together and Kenny, although he cares for Lucy, leaves and she doesn't see him for a long time. Lucy gets pregnant and has to delay her education.

She has a little girl and moves in with Clara who helps her out.
7. Howie is visiting a relative in Vancouver when he is taken from his mother and placed at the school. Who is he visiting?

Answer: Auntie Mae

The summer that Howie turns six, his mother takes him to visit his Auntie Mae in Vancouver. While there, he is amazed at electricity and running water, has a birthday cake and enjoys a spoiled non-reservation life. While out with his mother and auntie on his sixth birthday, they run into a priest who enquires about the boy's age. Shortly thereafter the priest and RCMP turn up at his auntie's house and remove the boy to take him to school, despite the desperate pleas of his mother.

He is taken to the Mission school where he continually wets the bed.

He is beaten so badly that he ends up in hospital. While there, his auntie visits him and they devise a plan for him to escape the school.
8. Clara has a faithful dog that doesn't leave her side. What does she name him?

Answer: John Lennon

Clara is a tough young woman who attempts to deal with her past through action and activism. At her side is her canine companion John Lennon. During one of her activities, she crosses the border into the United States to deliver guns and ends up in trouble.

She gets into a car accident and it is John Lennon who helps to save her by keeping her warm until she is found. She is eventually taken to Mariah's cabin who helps to heal her physically, emotionally and spiritually. John Lennon stays by her side as her protector and companion.
9. Although he loves Lucy, Kenny's demons keep him from staying with her. When he dies, what does he leave her?

Answer: A large life insurance policy

Kenny cannot stay in one place for very long. He is restless and hurting, seeking alcohol and the company of women to try to distract him from his pain. He does truly love Lucy and their daughter and really tries to make a go of life with them, even getting married.

But his feelings of restlessness return and he leaves them again, turning to the bottle. When he dies, Lucy learns that he has a life insurance policy in her name that is worth $300,000. She is able to buy a nice house with the money.
10. Who becomes the first in the family and the first Aboriginal doctor in Canada?

Answer: Kendra

Kendra is the daughter of Lucy and Kenny. Kendra grows up with her father coming in and out of her life and as a young adult, she resents him for not being there. She finds out later on about his traumatic past but by then it is too late as he has died. Kendra is able to go to college as a result of the money he left her mom.

She becomes a doctor, the first "Indian doctor", as Clara states, in Canada. She is corrected and told to use the term Aboriginal by Kendra.
