Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" Quiz

Published in 1952, "The Old Man and the Sea" is one of Earnest Hemingway's smaller novels... small enough to pass for a short story, probably. However, Hemingway's "most popular work" is magical in its simplicity and endearing in its story. Enjoy.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The protagonist of this tale is an old Cuban fisherman who goes fishing every day, despite his terrible luck (fish-wise, that is). What is this old man's name?

Answer: Santiago

However, he is usually referred to in the book as "the old man".
2. The old man looks up especially to one certain baseball player. What baseball player was this?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Though the legend never actually appears in the book, DiMaggio plays an important part in "The Old Man and the Sea" as Santiago often compares his hardships to DiMaggio's bone spur, sympathizes with his fisherman father and refers to him as "the great DiMaggio".
3. The old man lives all by himself in a shabby shack... but it was not always so. He once had a wife. What happened to the old man's wife?

Answer: The book doesn't say

The only reason we know Santiago had a wife in the first place is that he has a tinted photograph of her which he keeps hidden as it makes him sad to see it.
4. In all the village, the old man only has one true friend: a young boy. The old man and the boy once fished together, but the boy's parents made him stop and fish in another boat because they said the old man was "salao", which means what?

Answer: The worst form of unlucky

Manolin (the boy) did not want to leave Santiago, but, as he said himself, he was just a boy and had to obey his parents. Santiago understood and they continued being close friends even though Manolin fished with a very successful fishing skiff while Santiago went day after day without catching much of anything.
5. What was the boy's name?

Answer: Manolin

However, much like Santiago is called "the old man", Manolin is mainly referred to as "the boy".
6. One day in September, just like any other day, the old man goes out fishing in the wee hours of the morning. After a while, he catches a an "albacore" (tuna), and then he hooks THE fish: the great marlin. At what time of the day did the old man hook the marlin?

Answer: Noon

Santiago hooked the marlin at noon on the "lucky" eighty-fifth day.
7. Land now out of sight, the old man is surprised to see a little bird flying across the water. It rests on his taut fishing line. What kind of bird was it?

Answer: A warbler

Santiago was glad for its company and talked a bit to the little bird, but it soon flew away when the fishing line jerked.
8. While hanging on to the line (constantly pulled by the marlin), the old man's hands got cut, burned and, in general, very hurt. One of his hands cramped. Was it his right hand?

Answer: No

Santiago never could control his left hand as well as his right. With his hand cramped and the line pulling, he threatened and then pleaded with his disobedient hand to cooperate, which it eventually did.
9. Darkness falls, and another day begins. The old man sees the marlin for the first time and is stunned by its length. He catches various smaller fish and eats them raw to sustain his strength. Again, darkness falls and another day begins. Finally, the fish slows down and the old man is able to stab it, kill it, and tie it fast to his skiff. And then the sharks started coming. Did the sharks leave anything at all from the great marlin?

Answer: yes

Though the sharks did eat nearly every bit of the marlin, they did leave the spinal cord and the head.
10. What is the very last line in "The Old Man and the Sea"?

Answer: The old man was dreaming about the lions.

We learn early on in the book that Santiago no longer dreams of storms, women, great occurrences, great fish, fights, contests of strength, his wife or of the boy, but that he "only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beach".
