Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Disappeared With A Burp

Answer: Gone With The Wind

Written by Margaret Mitchell, and made into a movie starring the incomparable Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, this is the story of love and passion during and after the American Civil War.
2. The Domestication of the Small Mammal

Answer: The Taming of the Shrew

The main story line in this amusing play by Shakespeare is the courtship and marriage by Petruchio, a lusty gentleman from Verona, to the strong willed and rebellious so called shrew, Katherina. Even though Katherina ends the play by giving a meek speech on why wives should always obey their husbands, one sincerely hopes her speech was just lip service and that Petruchio was in for a life of lively wedded bliss. Apart from being a comical play by the Bard, this work is an interesting sociological perspective on how women were expected to behave in Elizabethan times.
3. High Hopes

Answer: Great Expectations

This is a complicated tale of an orphan boy named Pip. Written in the first person it tells of his long journey to adulthood and becoming a respected and loved gentleman. Dickens makes awfully heavy reading, but his works translate well into film.
4. Haughtiness and Bias

Answer: Pride and Prejudice

Made into various film and TV productions, this is an enchanting and amusing love story set in 19th century England between the proud Mr Darcy and the prejudiced (be his behaviour) Elizabeth Bennet. This lively and romantic work continues, even after all this time, to be one of the most favourite works of fiction for Britain.
5. From This Place to Heaven

Answer: From Here to Eternity

A great war and love story set in the time period leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbour in the Second World War. The 1953 film of the same name won eight Academy Awards out of a colossal thirteen nominations.
6. Theft Below Limbs

Answer: Robbery Under Arms

An early Australian novel by Rolf Boldrewood, this was first presented to the public in serial form in a Syndey newspaper between 1882 and 1883. The many threads to the plot of this book reflect this serialisation. It covers the long life and adventures of two brothers in colonial Australia who turn to crime, try to rehabilitate themselves, but who are ultimately brought to justice with the death of one and the imprisonment of the other. Boldrewood was the pseudonym for Thomas Browne, who worked as an Australian police magistrate for the greater part of his life, and thus was an expert in the chosen genre of his writing.
7. Soft is the Evening

Answer: Tender is the Night

Written by the great F. Scott Fitzgerald during one of the times his wife Zelda was hospitalised for mental illness, this is the last completed novel by this brilliant author before his death in 1940 at the age of 44.
8. The Elderly Gent and the Ocean

Answer: The Old Man and the Sea

The last major work by Hemmingway, this novel tells the story of the old fisherman, Santiago, and his battle with a valiant giant marlin far out in the ocean. A horrible story really for all its symbolism of man's struggle through life and its religious overtones and so forth. For me, the hero was the fish.
9. The Fruits of Anger

Answer: The Grapes of Wrath

This novel by Steinbeck won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 and the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962. You know the story I'm sure - poor cropfarmers driven out of their home by drought and hard times during the changing times in the industry of agriculture. A grim and depressing work of literature. Why don't people write happy books any longer?
10. Dusk

Answer: Twilight

One of four novels about a love story featuring vampires and werewolves and all sorts of ghastly creatures. Is there something wrong with me that I don't find it terribly appealing to have a set of fangs stuck in my neck while my life's blood is drained away? Oh Mickey Mouse, come back, we love you.
