Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old is Meggie at the beginning of the story?

Answer: 12

Meggie lives with her father, who she has always called Mo. Mo is a bookbinder. A stranger, Dustfinger, comes to see Mo in the middle of the night. Dustfinger warns Mo of someone called Capricorn. Capricorn is looking for Mo. Mo tells Meggie not to worry. Dustfinger calls Mo Silvertongue.
2. In which country is Meggie's aunt, Elinor, presumed to live?

Answer: England

Mo tells Meggie that they are going on a journey - nothing unusual, as Mo's job often takes him and Meggie away. Mo hides a book from Meggie, which is unusual. Meggie always takes her book box with her. Elinor is Meggie's mother's aunt. Just as they are about to leave, they find Dustfinger at the gate, waiting for them.
3. What does Elinor Loredan collect?

Answer: Books

Elinor's home is in the south. Dustfinger says Capricorn is based in the north. Dustfinger has a pet marten, with horns, called Gwin. Dustfinger wants Mo to take him with them to Elinor's. He does not seem eager to meet with Capricorn either. Mo has something Capricorn wants, a book. Mo says he will explain to Meggie soon. Mo tells Elinor that he has come to repair all of her books. Elinor unwillingly allows her three unexpected guests to stay. Later, Meggie follows Mo. Dustfinger explains a few things to Meggie.

He says that Mo is going to give Elinor the book which he hid from Meggie. Dustfinger says that Capricorn will kill Mo if he doesn't get this book. Dustfinger wants Meggie to find out what Mo and Elinor are planning to do.
4. Who doesn't come to Elinor's house, to look for the mysterious book?

Answer: Mortola

Elinor allows Meggie to have a quick look at the mysterious book, even though Mo is reluctant. There is an illustrated picture of Gwin in the book. Elinor will keep it safe in her library. Meggie learns that Dustfinger is a fire-eater, also a juggler.

He promises to put on a show for her that evening. Dustfinger gives Meggie a wonderful performance of his fire eating. Meanwhile, inside Elinor's house, men are demanding that Mo give them the book that Elinor hid in her library. The men take Mo to the mysterious Capricorn, with the book.

There is nothing that Meggie and Elinor can do to stop it.
5. What does Mo always keep under his pillow?

Answer: A photograph

The photograph is of Meggie's mother. Mo has always said she had to go away, when Meggie was only three years old. Meggie finds the mysterious book that Mo had given to Elinor, in Elinor's room. Elinor had swapped the books. Meggie is very worried for Mo - Capricorn will kill Mo if he hands over the wrong book. The book is called 'Inkheart', it was published almost 38 years ago.
6. Where does Dustfinger think the men took Mo?

Answer: Capricorn's village

Dustfinger returns to Elinor's house. He tried to follow Mo and the men. He promises to take Meggie to Capricorn's village. He wants to leave Elinor behind, but Elinor has other ideas. Dustfinger has a guilty conscience. He betrayed Mo to Capricorn. He enters Meggie's room, while she is sleeping.

He is looking for 'Inkheart'; it is at the bottom of Meggie's book box. Dustfinger is a very slow reader. But he isn't brave enough to take the book; he replaces it in the box.
7. Who is the first to greet Dustfinger, when they arrive at Capricorn's village?

Answer: Basta

Although Dustfinger told Mo that Capricorn is based in the north, Capricorn's men are heading south. Dustfinger sets off with Elinor and Meggie. They use Elinor's car rather than Mo's camper van. Capricorn's village is in the middle of nowhere and guarded well. Dustfinger seems to know Basta. Basta is extremely superstitious. Elinor tells Meggie not to hand over 'Inkheart' until they have seen Mo.
8. What colour is Capricorn's dressing gown?

Answer: Red

Capricorn had told Dustfinger to bring the girl and the book. He has no use for Elinor. When Capricorn takes the book from Meggie, it is obviously the right one. Capricorn says Mo has an extraordinary talent, and Meggie's presence will make Mo do whatever Capricorn wants. Elinor and Meggie are going to be locked up. Elinor and Meggie find themselves in the same small room as Mo. Mo seems fine.

He finally thinks it is time to tell Meggie the whole story, which started nine years ago.
9. When Mo read 'Inkheart' aloud to his wife nine years before the story began, how many people did he manage to read out?

Answer: 3

Mo is able to read things and people out of books. This is why his nickname is Silvertongue - and also why he has never read aloud to Meggie. Mo managed to read Basta, Capricorn and Dustfinger out of 'Inkheart', but Meggie's mother disappeared without trace.

She seemed to have been read into 'Inkheart'. Dustfinger hates the real world and has often begged Mo to read him back into 'Inkheart'. But Mo isn't able to. Now Capricorn wants Mo to read aloud to him. Capricorn probably promised Dustfinger he would read him back into 'Inkheart', if he brought Mo, Meggie and the book to him.
10. "Hey, where did he come from?" Which of Capricorn's men says this about the boy Mo reads out of a book?

Answer: Cockerell

Mo, Meggie and Elinor are summoned to Capricorn's church. Dustfinger is there too; Capricorn explains that he doesn't want to be read back into 'Inkheart'. He didn't like it there. He has collected all the copies that exist of 'Inkheart; and he burns them all, in front of everyone. Capricorn had got another reader, to read to him - Darius - but he isn't as good as Mo. Capricorn wants Mo to read him out gold - he loves money.

He tells Mo to read aloud 'Treasure Island'. Mo manages to read out lots of gold out of 'Treasure Island'.

He purposely stumbled on the name Long John Silver, so that the pirate wouldn't be read out too. Next, Capricorn tells Mo to read from 'Tales from a Thousand and One Nights'. No gold and jewels this time. But an Arab appears, and one of Capricorn's men, Fulvio, has vanished. Capricorn still has one copy of 'Inkheart'. Tomorrow, Mo will read from it.

He wants Mo to read him a friend out of the book.
11. What does Basta always wear around his neck?

Answer: Amulet

Dustfinger helps Mo, Meggie and Elinor escape, together with the boy that Mo read out of the book. The boy is called Farid, and seems to believe that everything that has happened is all a dream. They drive out of Capricorn's village in Elinor's car. As they drive on, they are being followed by another vehicle.
12. What sort of food does Dustfinger say dulls a dog's sense of smell?

Answer: Cheese

Farid, Dustfinger and Mo hide with Meggie and Elinor. Basta and Flatnose are searching for them, with dogs. But the dogs trust Dustfinger and dislike Basta.
13. Where did Elinor go, as soon as they reached a town?

Answer: Bank

Elinor, Mo and Meggie stay in an expensive hotel. Meggie wants to go back home to her books. She knows that Mo is worried about 'Inkheart'. A man called Fenoglio wrote 'Inkheart', and doesn't live too far away. She has got his address, and gives it to Mo. Mo hopes that Fenoglio will have a few copies of 'Inkheart'. He and Meggie will go and see Fenoglio, and then go on to Elinor's home.
14. Who is hiding in Fenoglio's cupboard?

Answer: Pippo

Dustfinger says he's going with Mo and Meggie when they go to see Fenoglio. But he doesn't want to meet Fenoglio; he just wants to know if he has any copies of 'Inkheart'. Meggie wishes she could read like Mo and bring things alive. Pippo, Paula and Rico are Fenoglio's grandchildren.

He had three copies of 'Inkheart', but they were all stolen. Fenoglio discusses his characters. Dustfinger died in the book, from protecting Gwin. Mo knew Dustfinger's fate but never told him. This means if Dustfinger is read back into 'Inkheart', he will die. Fenoglio never killed off Basta or Capricorn. Capricorn was one of his best villains. Fenoglio wants to see Dustfinger.

He and his grandchildren follow Meggie and Mo to the market square.
15. What dead animal does Elinor find in her library?

Answer: Rooster

Fenoglio tries to talk to Dustfinger. Mo tells Dustfinger how he dies in 'Inkheart'. Farid wants to stay with Dustfinger, even though he plans to go back to Capricorn's village. Dustfinger plans to steal 'Inkheart'. Farid asks Dustfinger to teach him about fire. Mo doesn't want to return to Elinor's house yet.

He wants to ask Fenoglio to do something for him - but doesn't tell Meggie what. When Elinor gets home, she finds lots of her books trampled on and off their shelves. In the garden is a pile of ashes, which used to be Elinor's most precious books.
