Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chronologically, "Patriot Games" comes before "The Hunt for Red October".

Answer: True

It's interesting reading them in chronological order, because you see a well-developed friendship between Jack and a character in "Patriot Games" that isn't even mentioned in "The Hunt for Red October" even though you meet the same character in both.
2. The novel opens stating that "Ryan was nearly killed twice in half an hour." How was he almost killed the first time?

Answer: He was almost run over by a double-decker bus

Before stepping off the curb, Jack looked left, then right, then left again - which won't help you very much when people are driving on the 'wrong' side of the road.
3. Who did Jack witness being attacked on the street?

Answer: The Prince and Princess of Wales

In the movie, they change the target from the Prince and Princess of Wales (never actually named in the book) to a fictional member of the Royal Family named Lord Holmes.
4. Where on his body was Jack shot by the terrorist? Be specific.

Answer: Left Shoulder

Jack rated the best possible surgeon (Sir Charles Scott) on his shattered shoulder after saving the lives of the Prince and Princess of Wales (and baby).
5. While in the hospital, Jack meets the FBI's Legal Attaché from the US Embassy. This begins a friendship that carries on through all the following Jack Ryan novels. Who is it?

Answer: Dan Murray

After the events that open the novel "Executive Orders" Dan Murray is appointed to the position of Director of the FBI by the President.
6. What is the name of the group responsible for the attack on the Royal Family?

Answer: ULA

ULA - Ulster Liberation Army, IRA - Irish Republican Army, PIRA - Provisional Irish Republican Army, INLA - Irish National Liberation Army
7. Who is the mastermind behind the terrorists?

Answer: Kevin O'Donnell

The part of Kevin O'Donnell was played by Patrick Bergen in the movie adaptation.
8. Who is the terrorist that is captured and put on trial?

Answer: Sean Miller

Sean Bean, of Lord of the Rings fame, was the actor who played the part of Sean Miller in the movie adaptation.
9. Jack hates to fly, but found the experience somewhat bearable on this plane.

Answer: Concorde

It was bearable only because it took half the time a normal commercial airline would have taken.
10. After returning to America, Jack receives word that the terrorist prisoner has escaped. Where did the 'break-out' happen?

Answer: On a ferry

This was another change that the movie made from the book. In the movie they had it happen on a bridge.
11. What kind of car does Cathy Ryan drive?

Answer: Porsche

A Porsche is the only type of car Cathy had ever driven until after she was married to Jack (it's hard to go shopping and for family drives in a Porsche).
12. What is the name of the nursery that Sally stays at during the day?

Answer: Giant Steps

Sean Miller and his American contact Alex Dobbens watched Giant Steps from the 7-11 across the Ritchie Highway in preparation for their hit.
13. Does Jack get attacked outside of the Naval Academy after he hears about Cathy and Sally's "accident"?

Answer: No

Jack had stayed late after work at the firing range, and with his friend Robby. When he learned of the 'accident' Cathy and Sally were in, Robby gave him a ride to the hospital, and Jack's potential attacker never saw him. (another difference from the movie)
14. Alex Dobbens, the terrorists' American contact, works for what company?

Answer: Baltimore Gas & Electric Company

Because of his job, Alex is able to provide the means for an attack on Jack's house later in the story - a faulty transformer that needs repair.
15. Due to Jack's analysis of satellite photos, what terrorist camp is identified after he finds a woman sunbathing?

Answer: Action-Directe

Jack is allowed to watch the attack on the Action-Directe camp on a live satellite feed.
16. How is the surveillance of the bookstore discovered?

Answer: An electrical short

The light fixture shorts out and when Cooley called in the electrician, he discovered the listening device planted there.
17. Who is discovered to be the one within the British government who leaks information to the terrorists?

Answer: Geoffrey Watkins

Watkins works with the British Foreign Service, and helps organize the Prince and Princess of Wales' itinerary.
18. Jack kills Dennis Cooley.

Answer: False

Cooley is killed by a sentry at the boats waiting at the base of the cliff.
19. Jack kills Sean Miller.

Answer: False

Unlike the action-packed movie, where there is a one-on-one struggle between Jack and Sean, the book is almost anti-climactic as the terrorists are all captured trying to escape to a freighter. Jack almost kills Sean, but doesn't stoop to his level.
20. What happy event ends the novel?

Answer: The birth of John Patrick Ryan, Jr.

Jack's knighthood and Sally's recovery take place much earlier in the book, and Robby isn't promoted beyond Commander until a later book.
