This spell was started by four sisters of the dark who used Kahlan in order to steal the boxes of Orden. Although no one remembers her, Richard does because the Sword of Truth protected him while the spell was cast.

Kahlan, as well as Sisters Armina, Cecilia, and Ulicia, are astonished to find out that an innkeeper can see and remember Kahlan. Random people continue to be able to see and remember Kahlan throughout the novel. We find out later that this is because the chimes have corrupted the Chainfire spell.

Answer: Verification Web

Nicci casts a verification web using her own blood laced with subtractive magic. She runs this web through an interior perspective in order to gain more insight into the spell. While doing this Richard is able to tell that the chimes have infected the spell and have corrupted it. Nicci is only able to escape the web with Richard's help.

Answer: Six

Nicci tells Shota that Six is from the old world and was feared by sisters of the dark. After Cara remarks on the Six's curious name, Shota tells her that the name Six was probably given as a derogatory and belittling statement by her mother.

Answer: Barracus

Richard learned from Shota that after Barracus went to the Temple of the Winds, he had his wife deliver a book to a secret place to help Richard. After he did this he jumped from the Wizard's Keep. At the Temple of the Winds he insured that Richard would be born with subtractive power in order to counter the damage done by another wizard, Lothain, who insured a dreamwalker would be born.

Answer: The Land of the Night Wisps.

Barracus had his wife hide the book in the land of the Night Wisps. Richard was taken here by the Sliph when, during transport, he lost his gift. The Sliph used an emergency portal to drop off Richard before he died.

Answer: Violet & Six; Six uses Violet to draw a spell.

Violet has inherited an ability that enables her to enact magic by drawing it like a painting. Six helps her to do this and under Six's careful watch she is able to steal away Richard's gift while he is in the Sliph. When this happened, the Sliph dropped him off at the emergency portal.

Answer: Jagang; he has always been in their minds.

When the Sisters finally reach Caska they discover Jagang waiting for them and that he has allowed them to believe they were free of him so that they could follow their plan. He only made himself known to them at this point so that he could take advantage of their work.

Answer: Richard fights his way out and is drafted into a Ja'La team.

Although Richard's gift has been captured he still remembers how to fight with a sword. He efficiently cuts down wave after wave of Imperial Order troops. A commander sees this and makes him an offer: be executed or join his Ja'La team. Richard joins the team and is eventually taken to the main army to play against elite teams.

Answer: To validate the Book of Counted Shadows.

Jagang needs Kahlan in order to validate the Book of Counted Shadows. We learn that five copies were made and that only one was a true copy, thus four were fake. Nicci believes that Richard memorized a fake copy and so Jagang needs Kahlan in order to determine which book is real or not, so that he can properly invoke the power of Orden.

Answer: She steals the box of Orden.

During her escape, Rachel takes the box of Orden from Six and Violet. Once out of the castle Chase arrives and defends her from some guards chasing her.

Answer: Nathan Rahl

As a gifted heir, Nathan is able to carry on the bond that protects them all from Jagang. Although Cara and Nicci don't like having to call him Lord Rahl, they must pledge their loyalty to him in order to be protected from the dreamwalker.

Answer: no

Richard is unable to read the book that he found and ends up leaving it in a cell in Tamarang. The book appears all blank because Six and Violet stole his gift and he needs his gift in order to read it.

Answer: She smiles at the news of attacks all over the Old World.

Jagang does not easily become enraged (not even when Kahlan kills his men because he doesn't really care), but he becomes livid when he hears that the D'Haran army went into the Old World and has been wreaking havoc among many cities. They have especially been killing those who promote the doctrine of the Imperial Order.

When Jagang sees Kahlan smiling at this news, he becomes even more angry.

Answer: Nicci invokes the power of Orden in Richard's name.

At the very end of the novel Nicci throws the fate of the entire world in Richard's hands by invoking the power of Orden in Richard's name. Therefore if Richard does not collect the boxes of Orden and make a play before a year goes by, he will be killed.
