Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the present King of Scotland at the beginning of the play?

Answer: Duncan

Duncan was actually the real ancestor of many British kings and queens such as Elizabeth I and Malcolm, who is an important character in this play.
2. What is the apparition that leads Macbeth to kill King Duncan while he is sleeping?

Answer: a floating dagger

The bloody infant is featured later in the play and I was paying homage to another work by Shakespeare, "Hamlet", by mentioning Macbeth's father's ghost.
3. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have two sons named Malcolm and Donalbain.

Answer: False

Malcolm and Donalbain are actually the sons of Duncan.
4. Other than the three witches, with what supernatural figure does Macbeth enter into dialogue as he plans his deeds?

Answer: Hecate

Hecate is the goddess that the three witches worship throughout the play.
5. What is Banquo's son's name?

Answer: Fleance

Macbeth sends a few medieval henchman to kill Banquo because the three witches prophesied that Banquo will have sons that will be kings.
6. Banquo's son escapes the attack on his father's carriage and runs to Scotland. The court, hearing the news, makes him the king.

Answer: False

Banquo's son, Fleance, does actually survive the attack but he does not become King of Scotland in the process.
7. What malady does Lady Macbeth suffer from that causes a doctor to visit her in her bedroom while she is suffering from that same syndrome?

Answer: sleepwalking

Her tendency to sleepwalk and talk in her sleep leads to some very interesting facts being let out in public, such as her husband's crimes.
8. Is this quote by Lady Macbeth, while she is sleepwaking, correctly quoted? "Out damned stain! Out, I say!"

Answer: No

The quotation is not given quite correctly. After she says "Out damned spot! Out, I say!", she lets the information about Banquo's death slip without knowing that two people are in the room listening to her every word.
9. Who is the Earl of Northumberland and the General of the English Forces?

Answer: Siward

Siward's son is slain when he challenges Macbeth to a sword fight, making him one of Macbeth's many victims.
10. Who becomes the King of Scotland at the end of the battle against Macbeth? He also recites the last monologue of the play.

Answer: Malcolm

Macduff has an arduous duel with Macbeth with the result of Macbeth being beheaded. Thus ends Macbeth's vicious streak of tyranny.
