Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the mother of the family.

Answer: Bessie

In "Raise High the Room Beam, Carpenters," we are told that Bessie's maiden name was Gallagher. Her husband's name was Les. (Did you see Les Glass?)
2. Who is Boo Boo?

Answer: One of the Glass children

In birth order, Boo Boo (real name Beatrice) comes between Buddy and the twins, Walt and Waker.
3. In which of the "Nine Stories" does Boo Boo appear?

Answer: "Down at the Dingy"

In "Down at the Dingy," Boo Boo comforts her son Lionel, and very nicely, too.
4. What is the name of the radio program on which the Glass children were featured?

Answer: "It's A Wise Child"

In "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters," we learn that all seven of the Glass children were paid panelists on "It's A Wise Child" at various times between 1927 and 1943, all under pseudonyms.
5. What did Mr. and Mrs. Glass do for a living?

Answer: They were vaudeville performers

In "Zooey" we are told that on Seymour's 21st birthday, Bessie and Les "did a lovely soft-shoe" from the old act for his amusement.
6. In "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," what was the woman in the elevator allegedly doing that annoyed Seymour?

Answer: Looking at his feet

The woman had zinc salve on her nose, and claimed to have been looking at the floor. Unfortunately, her claim of innocence was apparently not much comfort to Seymour.
7. Which of the following concerns Seymour's wedding?

Answer: "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters"

" 'You'd better not say you're a friend of the groom,' the Matron of Honor interrupted me, from the back of the car. 'I'd like to get my hands on him for about two minutes. Just two minutes, that's all.' "
8. What is the title of the otherwise unpublished Glass family story that appeared in The New Yorker in June, 1965?

Answer: "Hapworth 16, 1924"

The story is in the form of a long letter written from summer camp by Seymour to Boo Boo.

The incorrect answers are all fragments of sentences from "Zooey."
9. In "Zooey," what is Zooey doing during most of the conversation with his mother?

Answer: Taking a bath

" 'I'll just be a minute, for goodness' sake. Pull the shower curtain.' "
10. What long, rambling piece consists of Buddy's seemingly random reflections and reminiscences?

Answer: "Seymour - An Introduction"

Buddy warns us early on that he's going to have some difficulty writing about Seymour, and, in fact, he does.

On the dust jacket of the first edition of "Seymour - An Introduction"(1959), Salinger writes that he has "several new Glass stories coming along -- waxing, dilating -- each in its own way..." We continue to wait patiently.
