Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chapter 1: In the beginning, Nick describes a man using these words, "______, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." Who is this man Nick is talking about?

Answer: Jay Gatsby

Nick starts out the story reciting a quote that his father had always told him, "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." Throughout the story Nick seems to back down from criticizing Gatsby because of what his father told him.
2. Chapter 2: On the first page of this chapter, Nick describes a place that is between New York and West Egg. What is this "gray"-like place?

Answer: Valley of Ashes

This is the area where the Wilsons live and George has his car shop and gas station. It is overlooked by the mysterious eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, which happens to be a tall billboard.
3. Chapter 3: In this chapter Nick mentions the huge, colorful parties his neighbor has through the summer nights. Which day of every week did five crates of oranges and lemons arrive from a fruiterer in New York for these parties?

Answer: Friday

Every Monday the same oranges and lemons left his neighbor's house as "pulpless halves".
4. Chapter 4: In this chapter Gatsby has Nick sit in his car and says, "Good morning, old sport. You're having lunch with me today and I thought we'd ride up together." What color is Gatsby's car?

Answer: yellow

There are many colors that symbolize many of the characters in this book. Gatsby is usually referred to with the color yellow, the Buchanans are associated with the color green because of their wealth, and Daisy is usually associated with the color white because she is "pure".
5. Chapter 5: There is a conversation between Gatsby and Nick that is about someone that Gatsby wants to meet again and so he asks Nick to invite them over for tea. Who is this person that Gatsby is so eager to meet? Hint: It's a blood relative of Nick's.

Answer: Daisy

When Daisy arrives at Nick's house Gatsby has escaped out of the living room. Then once she is inside the house, Gatsby shows up, and Nick slips out of the house to leave the two alone to catch up with the years they lost.
6. Chapter 6: In this chapter we find out about a little of Gatsby's background. What was his legal name?

Answer: James Gatz

Gatsby had changed his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby at the age of seventeen and at the that moment he recognized the beginning of his career, "...when he saw Dan Cody's yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior."
7. Chapter 7: In this chapter Tom realizes that Daisy is having an affair with Gatsby because in some way they show that they are in love. What is the only thing that Daisy says to Gatsby after they look each other straight in the eye?

Answer: "You always look so cool"

What is ironic about this situation is that Tom is having an affair of his own with Myrtle, but yet he's furious that Daisy, his own wife, is looking at another man, Gatsby, the way she does.
8. Chapter 8: After Daisy hits and kills Myrtle with Gatsby's yellow car, Gatsby finally starts to realize that his dream is melting away from him. "But it was all going too fast now for his blurred eyes and he knew that he had lost that part of it, the freshest and the best, forever." What dream of Gatsby's is this referring to?

Answer: Getting Daisy

When Nick leaves Gatsby's house to go to New York, he shouts back to him,
"'They're a rotten crowd,' I shouted across the lawn. 'You're worth the whole damn bunch put together.' I've always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him, because I disapproved of him from the beginning to end."
9. Chapter 9: In the end of chapter 8 George goes over to Gatsby's house because he finds out that the car that hit Myrtle was owned by Gatsby, so he goes to kill him. Gatsby is in the pool when he is shot by George and then George takes his own life. Only one person shows up at Gatsby's funeral that Nick plans, besides Nick and Gastby's father. Who is this mysterious guest?

Answer: The owled-eyed man

Everyone else that Nick tried getting hold of, to tell them of Gatsby's death and invite them to his funeral, refused to contact him back or just refused to come to the funeral. Only the owled-eyed man from the library of Gatsby's house came.
10. Chapter 9: Who told George Wilson that the yellow car that killed Myrtle belonged to Gatsby even though Gatsby wasn't the one that was driving it when it collided with her?

Answer: Tom

Nick decides to go back out to western United States again because his time was done in the east. He didn't want to live there anymore. Everything was in the past.
