quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. J. D. Robb is the pen name of which author?

Answer: Nora Roberts

She chose to use a pen name based on how different this series is compared to her other works.
2. In which of these novels does Eve Dallas investigate a murder at one of Roarke's hotels?

Answer: Betrayal in Death

Eve is consistently finding connections to Roarke in her cases. Either a crime occurs on one of his properties or a suspect lives or works on one. Of course, this is a hazard when you are a man who owns "half the damn planet", as Eve would say.
3. Which of the following titles has a case involving witchcraft and orgies?

Answer: Ceremony in Death

The character of Jamie is introduced in this novel. He appears sporadically throughout the series, but he is a very likeable character.
4. Which novel initially has one of Roarke's employees implicated in the murder of two agents from Homeland Security?

Answer: Divided in Death

As it turns out, there are two murders, but only one of them is an agent.
5. Which of these novels has a plot where a powerful Prosecuting Attorney and beautiful young actress are both murdered, and Eve finds out that they were both friends or lovers of Roarke?

Answer: Glory in Death

Roarke is, of course, not involved in the murders of Prosecuting Attorney Cicely Towers and Yvonne Metcalf.
6. The homeless are murdered for their organs in which book?

Answer: Conspiracy in Death

And the reason is not at all what you would think.
7. Which book has victims that are all lonely hearts who can be traced to "Personally Yours", a dating service.

Answer: Holiday in Death

No one likes to be alone for the holidays, so enrolment at the expensive service is up, thereby increasing the pool of potential victims.
8. A serial killer uses the modus operandi of other famous serial killers to commit his crimes in which of the following novels?

Answer: Imitation in Death

I liked this plot particularly. At first, the reader assumes that the killer is just a Jack the Ripper wannabe, then he follows with the Boston Strangler case, and the reader spends some time trying to figure out which killer he will imitate next. Ted Bundy is the obvious choice, as his killings fit the profile perfectly, but it is still fun to ponder who it could have been.
9. A rare and very expensive date-rape drug is the murder weapon in which novel?

Answer: Seduction in Death

The killers turn out to be a pair of very creepy losers.
10. Dave Palmer gets out of a mental institution after three years and is determined to get revenge with everyone who helped put him there, starting with a judge found in Times Square on Christmas morning and ending with Eve Dallas on New Year's Eve. Which title am I describing?

Answer: Midnight in Death

This is a novella written for publication in an anthology. It immediately follows "Holiday in Death".
11. In which novel is Nixie Swisher's entire family killed, causing Eve to take temporary custody of the child in order to protect her?

Answer: Survivor in Death

The desire for an orange soda is the only thing that saves Nixie from meeting her family's grisly fate.
12. In which book is Mavis Freestone the prime suspect?

Answer: Immortal in Death

Eve is willing to risk her career and her life to clear her best friend's name. The bond between Mavis and Eve is an interesting one. Mavis was previously a "collar" of Eve's, and is now her closest friend.
13. Two men tortured and brutally murdered; one in his own home and one at a hotel. Both are linked by a ten-year-old secret, and that secret links them to Roarke. What novel does this describe?

Answer: Vengeance in Death

It seems as though either Roarke's or Eve's (and sometimes both) pasts are always coming back to haunt them.
14. Which book's plot has Eve go off-planet to give a seminar, only to have a murder occur while she is there?

Answer: Interlude in Death

Again, a murder that occurs on one of Roarke's properties. If he weren't so wealthy, this would be either highly suspicious to the characters, or completely unbelievable to the reader, but Roberts manages the continuity of these coincidences in a believable fashion. I found the commander and his illegitimate son very creepy. And the motive for the murders was both sad and startling.
15. A serial killer strangles young women with a red ribbon and then plucks out their eyes. This is the plot of which J.D. Robb title?

Answer: Visions in Death

The title is not as tacky as it sounds. It refers to a psychic who assists them on the case, not to the eyeless victims.
16. Which novel takes Eve to her first stage play which becomes a murder scene in which Nadine Furst is one of many suspects?

Answer: Witness in Death

Poor Nadine is just one in a long list of suspects. The victim treats women so badly that he is what we used to refer to back in the day as a scum-dog. This behaviour is what leads to his death.
17. Which novel's plot involves Max Ricker, two murdered cops who appear to be on the take, and a crime scene in Purgatory (a club owned by Roarke)?

Answer: Judgment in Death

This is the first novel which hints at a possible connection between Eve's and Roarke's biological fathers.
18. What is Officer/Detective Peabody's first name?

Answer: Delia

Amelia Peabody is the detective character in the popular Elizabeth Peters series. Lieutenant Sugar is Charles Monroe's nickname for Eve.
19. In which of the several novels where Eve is injured by a bomb is Cassandra the culprit?

Answer: Loyalty in Death

Cassandra is, of course, not a person but an organization.
20. In which J.D. Robb title do Eve and Roarke meet for the first time?

Answer: Naked in Death

This is the one that started it all.
21. What is the name of the J.D. character who is a Licensed Companion (legalized prostitute) who is a friend of Eve's, dates Peabody, and falls in love with the good Dr. Dimatto?

Answer: Charles Monroe

Charles is one of the characters that is used for comic relief. Although all of the characters show sense of humor at times, I really like Charles. He is just tongue-in-cheek enough to whet my fancy.
22. What novel revolves around three apparent suicides, all using diffent M.O.s, that may be the result of virtual reality gaming?

Answer: Rapture in Death

This is the first novel after the wedding. An interesting note, the wedding is never actually shown in any of the books. The book prior to this involves discussion of wedding preparation, and this book begins immediately following the honeymoon.
23. Eve Dallas is very appropriately named. Which character is more well-named, with a name that describes his character?

Answer: Trueheart

He is so honest and naive that even those who want to hate him can't help but like him.
24. My favorite character in these novels is desperately in love with Detective Peabody. In which novel is he almost killed by a man infected by a virus that he caught from his computer?

Answer: Purity in Death

McNabb is injured when a fellow EDD man is infected by a computer virus and stuns him.
25. In which novel is Julie Dockport, a perpertrator in one of Eve's old cases, released from jail and begins another killing spree, with Roarke as an eventual target?

Answer: Reunion in Death

She wants to challenge her nemesis (Eve) to a game of cops and robbers.
