Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Challenger: Laertes Reason for challenge: I am simply challenging the Prince of Denmark to a friendly fencing match. There is no way it turns into a highly fatal duel or anything, even though he just killed my father and drove my sister to suicide. Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Hamlet

In the final scene of "Hamlet", the title prince faces off against Laertes, a young man who left Denmark in Act I to pursue his studies in France. He returns, angry as all hell, in Act IV after his father's death.
2. Challenger: Mercutio Reason for challenge: This guy just challenged my friend to a duel, and my friend just turned him down! This disgrace will not stand! I don't know what made my friend back down, but this dog is going down one way or another. I challenge him in my friend's stead! Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Tybalt

In Act III of "Romeo and Juliet," Tybalt challenges Romeo to a fight in the streets of Verona in contravention of the Prince's order - the only reason being that Romeo crashed the Capulet party, which Tybalt views as an insult he must avenge. Romeo, newly married to Tybalt's cousin, does not wish to fight, but the edgy Mercutio refuses to let the challenge die and fights Tybalt instead, stepping forward to aggressively keep the fight alive.
3. Challenger: Roderigo Reason for challenge: I'm in love with Desdemona, even though she's married. Turns out she's aiming at this other military officer, her husband's ex-lieutenant who she's helping to get his job back! I will wait for him in the dark and jump him as a way to overleap his affront to my pursuit of the fair Desdemona! Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Cassio

Cassio is Roderigo's perceived competition for Desdemona's affections throughout "Othello". In reality, there is no such competition, as Desdemona is quite faithful to her husband, Othello, and the whole thing is a scheme by Iago to get Roderigo's money and pit Cassio against Othello.
4. Challenger: Harry Percy, aka Hotspur Reason for challenge: I've been leading this rebellion for a whole play now, all of "Henry IV Part I", and it finally has come to a head. I know I need to defeat my lifelong enemy on the king's side, he has always hated me and I have always hated him. He's a highborn ne'er-do-well and I'm a proper soldier, so we've been on a collision course for ages. Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Prince Hal

Hotspur fights Prince Hal one-on-one in the battle, but, as he finds out too late, his opponent isn't just a wayward prince but is also a budding warrior king. Hal defeats Hotspur in their duel and ends the battle.
5. Challenger: Benedick Reason for challenge: The love of my life, Beatrice, has just asked me to challenge someone to a fight to the death. I don't really want to because he's my friend but I have to, I love her! Also this guy did slander her cousin in public, causing immense shame. Yeah, I'll go challenge him now. Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Claudio

Claudio is a soldier and a friend of Benedick's in "Much Ado About Nothing". On Claudio's wedding day, he falsely accuses his fiancee Hero of cheating and refuses to marry her, after which she is presumed dead for a time. Beatrice is so upset at the slander done to her cousin Hero that she tells Benedick to challenge Claudio to a duel if he truly loves her. Benedick is reluctant but does make the official challenge at Beatrice's insistence.
6. Challenge: Cloten Reason for challenge: I am the son of the Queen and stepson of the king, Cymbeline, and on my way to seek out Posthumus, my enemy. But instead I run into a surly backwoods knave who taunts me and calls me stupid! The arrogance! I will fight him immediately! Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Guiderius

Guiderius is the oldest son of Cymbeline in "Cymbeline" but was kidnapped as a child and raised in the mountains. Cloten stumbles upon him on his way to try and kill Posthumus (who eloped with Cloten's fiancee), and ends up fighting Guiderius due to his own stupidity and belligerence.
7. Challenger: Earl of Richmond Reason for challenge: My opponent is a wretched tyrant who killed the sons of Edward IV. He's a cruel, physically deformed man with no mercy or right to the throne. I will challenge and kill him to do my nation right and reunite the warring factions of England. Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Richard III

Richard III is the titular hunchback king in Shakespeare, who kills his way to the top but then is attacked and killed by the up-and-coming Henry, Earl of Richmond. Richmond becomes Henry VII and the first Tudor king, taking the country past the days of the Lancaster versus York civil war.
8. Challenger: Edgar Reason for challenge: I have, since my flight from court, followed the awful plight of my father, the Earl of Gloucester, and the poor old King Lear. I realize now that my brother, who I thought was my friend and ally, is the one responsible for having my father so cruelly abused. He just offered to fight whoever challenged him for crimes he has committed - I will challenge him! Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Edmund

Edmund is the bastard brother of Edgar and he plays his father and brother against each other throughout "King Lear", driving them apart. Edmund also has his father turned in for the "crime" of aiding the old king so he can take his lands in his father and brother's absence. Edgar returns at the end to take his revenge on his brother for all he and his father have suffered.
9. Challenger: Henry Bolingbroke Reason for challenge: This guy I want to fight killed my uncle, the duke of Gloucester. Now, I know that the king, Richard II, put him up to it but I don't care, I want to make the point that even kings can't order deaths like this for their political gain. So I challenged him in full view of the court and now he HAS to fight me. Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Thomas Mowbray

Thomas Mowbray is put in quite the difficult position during the first scene of "Richard II" - he has to defend himself, but cannot openly declare that the king put the hit on the Duke of Gloucester. He has to simply accept the challenge and agree to fight to prove his innocence. Now Richard's god-given right to do what he likes is put up to the chance of the duel between Henry Bolingbroke and Thomas Mowbray.
10. Challenger: Macduff Reason for challenge: This tyrant king has killed my wife and children, and run my country into the ground. For Scotland! Who is the challenged party?

Answer: Macbeth

Macbeth, a cruel and bloodthirsty Scottish king, is the title character of "Macbeth". He attacks the Macduff castle and has everyone in it (i.e., Macduff's wife and children) killed, cementing Macduff's decision to join with Malcolm to help overthrow Macbeth.
