Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all know that Miss Marple lives in a little English village, but where exactly in England IS St Mary Mead?

Answer: about 25 miles from London, to the southwest

In "Nemesis", we are told that St Mary Mead lies about 25 miles from London, midway between Market Basing and Loomouth. These towns are both fictional, as is of course St Mary Mead itself. In the same book, Miss Marple remarks that she lives about 20 miles from Alton, which is a real town southwest of London.
2. What is the name of Miss Marple's house?

Answer: Danemead

Miss Marple's house is on the same side of the High Street as the Post Office, and is surrounded by her beloved garden.
3. Who do the older residents of St Mary Mead call when they want a taxi?

Answer: Inch

"Originally the proprietor of a cab, Mr Inch had died, been succeeded by his son 'Young Inch', then aged forty four, who had turned the family business into a garage and acquired two aged cars. On his decease the garage acquired a new owner. There had been since then Pip's Cars, James's Taxis and Arthur's Car Hire - old inhabitants still spoke of Inch." ("Nemesis" 1971)
4. One of Miss Marple's favorite pastimes is forbidden to her by her doctor, in the later books. What is it?

Answer: gardening

As early as 1957, in "The 4:50 from Paddington" ("What Mrs McGillicuddy Saw!" in the US) Miss Marple talks about her doctor's orders forbidding her from stooping or kneeling while gardening. In the later books, she is not allowed to garden at all. (The exception to this is "Sleeping Murder", the last Miss Marple book.

In this book, we see Miss Marple vigorously pulling up bindweed, and both stooping AND kneeling. However, this book was written many years before its 1976 publication date.)
5. Shame on that doctor, putting an end to all Miss Marple's fun! What is the name of the doctor in St Mary Mead, anyway?

Answer: Dr Haydock

Dr Haydock's house is on the Vicarage Road, not far from Miss Marple's.
6. A good friend of Miss Marple's lived for many years at Gossington Hall, just outside the village ("The Body in the Library" was found there). What is her name?

Answer: Dolly Bantry

The two ladies had their love of gardening in common. Gossington Hall was the scene of murder even after Mrs Bantry moved out, after her husband, the Colonel's, death. "The Mirror Crack'd From Side to Side" takes place there.
7. One of Miss Marple's friends is a former Commissioner of Scotland Yard. What is his name?

Answer: Sir Henry Clithering

He is described, in "The Tuesday Club Murders", as "that well groomed man of the world". He has a great respect for Miss Marple's powers of detection.
8. In "Murder at the Vicarage", it looks for a time as if the vicar's much younger wife, a friend of Miss Marple's, is implicated in the crime. What is her name?

Answer: Griselda

Griselda Clement's son, Leonard, is of use to Miss Marple in "The 4:50 From Paddington", because of his passion for maps. There seems to be some confusion as to the name of Griselda's son, as, in "The Body in the Library", she has a son named David. The Reverend Clement's first name is also Leonard. Maybe she had two boys, or maybe we have caught Miss Christie in a rare error!
9. Inspector Dermot Craddock appears in several Miss Marple books. What is his relationship to her?

Answer: he is her friend Sir Henry Clithering's godson

Inspector Craddock appeared in "A Murder is Announced", "The Mirror Crack'd From Side to Side", and "The 4:50 From Paddington". In the film versions of "The Mirror Crack'd", he is presented as Miss Marple's nephew.
10. Miss Marple would hardly ever get out of her village, if not for her nephew, who brings her to London on occasion, and sends her on vacations. His name is Raymond West - what is his occupation?

Answer: novelist

Raymond West, (Miss Marple's sister's son) is a writer of "modern" books.
