Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following characters did not go to the court?

Answer: Miss Maudie

Miss Stephanie goes to court, so do Scout, Jem, and Dill even though they are not allowed to. Miss Maudie does not attend because she feels that it isn't any of her business.
2. What does the NRA stand for?

Answer: National Recovery Act

Scout informs us that the NRA stands for the National Recovery Act as she is remembering stickers that said "NRA-WE DO OUR PART". Although this is not a substantial part of the book, I found it interesting because it also says that it was killed by nine old men ("I asked who killed it: he said nine old men"). This is referring to the Supreme Court.
3. How old is Jem at the beginning of Part Two of the book?

Answer: 12

Jem is 12 at the beginning of Part Two, and he is nearly 13 by the end of the book.
4. How much money did did Jem and Scout each bring to Calpurnia's church?

Answer: 10

Jem and Scout both brought ten cents to church. Calpurnia, however, wouldn't let them pay because they are her guests.
5. According to Jem, what is a mixed child?

Answer: Half White, half Black

Jem states that a mixed child is a child with one white parent and one black parent; he says this while referring to Dolphus Raymond.
6. Who is Nathan Radley?

Answer: Arthur's brother

Nathan Radley is Arthur's brother. Since their father died Nathan has been taking care of his brother. It is said that the only difference between him and his father are their ages.
7. Where does this story take place?

Answer: Maycomb

Atticus, Jem, Scout, and Miss Maudie are all residents in Maycomb County, though the Cunninghams are from Old Sarum.
8. Where is Atticus in the very last sentence of the book?

Answer: Jem's bedroom

"He turned out the light and went in Jem's room. He would be there all night, and he would be there when Jem waked up in the morning." This is how Harper Lee ends "To Kill A Mockingbird".
9. What do you say when you go through a Hot Steam?

Answer: Angel-bright, life-in-death; get off the road, don't suck my breath.

In Chapter Four we find out that what you're actually supposed to say when you go through a hot spring is "Angel-bright, life-in-death; get off the road, don't suck my breath." For those of you who don't know what hot springs are, they are described as "A Hot Stream's somebody who can't get to heaven, just wallows around on lonesome roads an' if you walk through him, when you die you'll be one too, an' you'll go around at night suckin' people's breath".
10. What does Dolphus Raymond drink from his paper bag?

Answer: Coca-Cola

Dolphus Raymond is one of the many interesting characters in this story. He pretends that he is drinking alcohol, but instead all that he drinks is Coca-Cola. He does this because he knows that the people in Maycomb will want a reason for why he spends time with black people. He feels that it is easier to let people think that he has a problem and that is why he lives the way he does.
