Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the tax gatherer went to Magrat's house attempting to collect taxes, what did she give him?

Answer: Tuppence

She gives it to him because he says he would be tortured by Lord Felmet if he didn't get witches to pay taxes. Nanny avoids it when she sends her sons Jason and Wen to tell him they don't want to join. He hangs around in Granny's raspberry bushes, but runs away when she goes out to ask him what he wants. Knowing how Granny would have reacted, that was probably a very wise decision.
2. Who are the thieves who confront the Fool in Ankh-Morpork, only to be outwitted by Tomjon?

Answer: J. H. "Flannelfoot" Boggis and Nephews, "The Old Firm"

Their card reads: "J. H. "Flannelfoot" Boggis and Nephews / Bespoke Thieves / "The Old Firm" / (Estblshd AM 1789) / All type Theft carryed out Professionly and with Disgression / Houses cleared. 24-hr service. No job too small. LET US QUOTE YOU FOR OUR FAMILY RATE"

Benjy "Lightfoot" Boggis is the real name of Brother Fingers in 'Guards! Guards!'

"The New Firm" is Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip in 'The Truth'.
3. Where do Magrat and the Fool first meet in the book?

Answer: A meadow

He is lying by the lake contemplating his horrible situation at the castle when he hears someone singing. It isn't very good singing, the only word the singer appears to know is "la." He stands up sheepishly, in a carrilon of jingles. To Magrat, it seems the meadow is sprouting a large red and yellow demon with three menacing horns.

When he realizes that he has surprised a witch, he runs away. But it was too late; they were now fated for each other.
4. What does Granny drink in the pub when she and Nanny talk to the Vitollers about taking the baby?

Answer: Port and Lemon

She sits stiffly behind it as if it is a shield against the lures of the world. Granny is not comfortable in public houses. At least not in this book.
5. Which of the apprentice actors is replaced by Death himself?

Answer: Dafe

Tomjon is, of course, the star of the show and the center of the whole story, so he's certainly not going to be replaced in the role of "The Evil King" (actually his father, but he doesn't know it). Gumridge plays "The Good Duchess" and Wimsloe is playing "The Good Duke". Poor Dafe has just three lines, but never gets to deliver them. Death himself takes over, and promptly forgets his lines.
6. While Granny is performing the time-changing spell, where does Magrat hover with sandwiches and a broom change?

Answer: Turnwise borders

She has tepid cocoa and "two rounds of egg and cress sandwiches with the crusts cut off" (and) "a small piece of parsley placed with consideration and care on top of each one".
7. What is the Fool's mother's family name?

Answer: Beldame

Nanny: "His mother was a Beldame, from over Blackglass way. Bit of a beauty when she was younger. Broke many a heart, she did. Bit of a scandal there, I did hear."

There is a resemblence between Tomjon (King Verence's son spirited away when the king is killed) and the Fool (whose name turns out to be Verence). Magrat assumes that is because King Verence is the father to both. Actually it turns out that the Tomjon is the son of the Queen and the Fool's father, making neither one an heir to the throne.

Granny: "We're bound to be truthful. But there's no call to be honest." They don't lie when they say the two are brothers and that Verence is the older. It's not their fault nobody asks who the father was.
8. How do Granny and Magrat get past the guards after Nanny has been imprisoned. (At least how does Granny attempt it.)

Answer: Posing as apple sellers

Granny has to resort to a hatpin. The guard then decides that since he was only told to watch out for witches he shouldn't bother apple sellers.
9. What is the name of the demon the witches conjure up in Nanny's washhouse?

Answer: WxrtHltl-jwlpklz

He says it is unpronouncable in their language. Granny hesitates just fractionally before saying it correctly first try.
10. When Tomjon, Hwel and company are waylaid by bandits on the road to Lancre, how is the chief bandit dispatched?

Answer: An airborne milk jug

The witches are watching them in Magrat's crystal ball when Tomjon tries the mercy speech from "The Troll's Tale". Granny refuses to allow her future king to beg, so she takes Magrat's milk jug and hurls it. The jug falls from the sky and knocks the bandit out, which is just as well, as he was somehow immune to Tomjon's words. Wimsloe collected all the broken pieces and spent the rest of the day watching the sky, hoping for a sugar bowl.
